Going mobile

Don Poaps

I'm planning on going mobile with YAAC and MOBILINK Bluetooth. In my home, I have no issues. I'll be connecting to my Samsung Tablet?which has data to pull the?map part of YAAC. I'll be using my Bluetooth TNC. In theory,?the map should load.?
I like to use PI 4 using KM4ACK build. This is my Test PI for Jason builds. For power, I'll be using a 12 v with a USB 5 v plug with 2 12 cigar plugs in the. I'm hoping I don't have any hiccups.
Yesterday my Aprsdroid shut down?because of overheating. I hope PI 4 doesn't have any issues.

I'm hoping my USB GPS dongle will work instead of my static GPS.

For what it's worth, I have a Raspberry Pi-3B in my car, running pretty much with no problem.? At least, it has not shut down due to temperature.? I do have the little fan installed, along with the stick-on heat sinks.? There's also no "hat" over the top; fans blow directly on the chips.? I'm using Direwolf and a cheap USB audio dongle for the TNC.? PTT is from a GPIO pin and a 1-transistor buffer.? GPS is from a USB GPS puck (a Garmin, I think).? I have the Pi's VGA port tied to the car's in-dash display, where the back-up camera goes.? The display can be set to view the camera even when the car is not in reverse, so that works out well, though it's a little small.? Ok, it's a lot small.? But in a pinch, it works.? My phone / tablet can also connect to the Pi with VNC.

Power is as you plan - USB power adapter in the 12v accessory port.? The Pi-4 takes more power than the Pi-3, so be sure to size the USB power dongle properly.? In use I just let the Pi boot when the car turns on (it's an EV), and it un-cerimoniously turns off when the car goes to sleep.? I know that's not the best idea, but have yet to mangle the SD card.? If it happens, I've made an image of the card from which I can restore things easily enough.

I also can use the phone as an Internet hotspot, but mostly it runs without it.? There's an option (thanks Andrew!) to automatically retry the Internet connection when it drops or comes up some time after booting.? The Pi is running the standard Raspbian Stretch distro.? Remember to turn off the option that has the system wait for the network during boot.

Good luck!

Unless you're traveling a long way, you won't need an Internet connection to pull maps on the road. The map download feature stores the raw map data on your laptop for the entire area you specified to download, so YAAC will keep redrawing the map based on local data until you drive past the edge of the local data you have.

Also, you can download multiple chunks of raw map data, instead of just one square (if, for example, you were flying to a distant city and wanted its map area).
