Hum interference after recaping my Xpander

Tobbe Bergman

Hi Xpander users

I noticed that my Xpander makes quite?a?loud humming noise just sitting close to it and when playing electric guitar right next to it makes the guitar signal really noisy.

I had it at my techie for almost a year but I cant remember it made such a loud hum sitting close to it or that it interfere with my guitar.

I have a lot of equipment but the Xpander makes the most noise and I can actually hear the humming across my room when there are no speakers on at all.

Apart from that it works great !

Could anyone confirm that this is normal or not ?

Thanks

Hi, this is not normal.

You quite likely need a hum eliminator:

I gather that it is an acoustic hum.

This is the transformer vibrating.Try tightening the screws or possibly use some rubber gromets to isolate the transformer from the chassi.

Oh, sorry, did you say that your Xpander is humming even though you don't have any loadspeakers connected and all other gear then the Xpander off?!

I think it is then only the power unit that is able to hum like this and it would require to be replaced. (Can be a fire risk, if you don't.)

Have you tried to connect it in a provenly correctly grounded (three wires) wall plug? And, also, tried in the both orientations of the plug?

...

I.e., is it more of acoustic than electric origin?

Yep !
My Xpanders transformer also hums a bit and did since I buyed it new,- but its not in the audio signal as also not a ground loop.
