OATAG conference update
Friends: A few days ago, James Delisle, our keynote speaker, informed us that although he is recovering well, his doctors have advised him against coming to Oregon for our conference on September 7th. Although we will miss Jim, we are ¨Cvery¡ªpleased and excited to announce that Dr. Michael Postma, who has a great depth of knowledge and experience in gifted education and is a very popular keynote speaker has agreed to step in in Jim¡¯s place. Below is a summary of the keynote that he plans to give us¡ªwatch for more information about Mike and the great lineup of other conference presenters soon. Anxiety and its Impact on Gifted and Twice-Exceptional Children, Teens, and Young Adults Living in an uncertain world, today¡¯s children are more anxious than ever. In fact, 1 of every 5 male high-schoolers struggles with chronic anxiety. Within the Gifted/2e population that number is much higher. In this session, Dr. Mike Postma explores how anxiety affects 2E students and what parents and professionals can do to help reduce their worries and nurture growth mindsets. After reviewing the biology, psychology and common sources of anxiety, they will show you how to help 2E children and teens change their relationship to worry, realistically evaluate situations and tolerate unpredictability. You¡¯ll learn practical, useful tools to promote self-soothing and calming down, diminish negative thoughts and inner critics and build lasting strategies for bouncing back and resilience. If you have any questions about the conference, feel free to contact me at president@... Margaret

Use better data to improve access
This article from "the 74 million" recommends the same steps we asked for in SB 796. Track student growth broken down by income/ethnicity. This session, it died in Ways and Means because the chair never scheduled it for a hearing. Let's get is over the finish line! the74million.org Don¡¯t Shut Advanced Programs that Keep Students Out ¡ª Use Data to Invite More In Glynn: Enrollment and test data can tell school leaders at all levels who participates, how they fare and which programs must cast a wider net.

Fordham Institute comment on Affirmative Action notes need for a national k-12 policy
Immediately following the announcement of the Supreme Court¡¯s decision outlawing the use of race in college admissions (see ¡°High Court Decision in College Admissions Case Has K-12 Implications¡±), the Biden Administration released a U.S. Department of Education plan to ¡°promote educational opportunity and diversity in colleges and universities.¡± It includes forthcoming guidance to higher education institutions on how to use still-lawful practices to promote diversity, particularly new ¡°measures of adversity¡± that consider what applicants may have had to overcome. The department also will consider expanding data collections and transparency around admissions factors and convene an ¡°educational opportunity¡± summit to bring colleges and universities together with students, advocates, and researchers to discuss a way forward. That¡¯s all well and good, but it¡¯s worth noting what was left off the department¡¯s laundry list: anything having to do with k-12 education. That¡¯s a huge missed opportunity and one that the administration should urgently work to address. One of the most effective ways to boost college diversity is by building broader, more inclusive paths to educational excellence. And that work starts in kindergarten. https://www.educationnext.org/building-diverse-college-campuses-starts-in-kindergarten/

Senator Frederick coffee chat. tomorrow Saturday
Friends, Senator Frederick will be holding a constituent meeting tomorrow. If you attend you might ask him to explain the death of SB 596 in the Ways and Means committee and why there is no funding at all for TAG services in light of the many other increases for education this session. Margaret "Our chat this Saturday will be at our usual location at Broadway Grill (1700 NE Broadway) at 9am tomorrow, Saturday, July 8th. We will again be livestreaming the chat on my Facebook page (facebook.com/SenLewFrederick) so you may view it virtually, though technology, and connection quality in particular, may be imperfect.... Since the grill opens at 9am, which is when we are able to get in, and we have to set up the microphones and speakers, please know that we will be a few minutes late getting the stream online. This is our first chat after the legislative session ended and there is much to discuss." Yours truly, Senator Lew Frederick

SB 736
Friends: I am very happy to be writing that SB 736, which creates a study of ways to increase access to advanced instruction, passed the House Chamber today¡ªits final odyssey through the Legislature. The only remaining step is the Governor¡¯s signature. This was the result of the testimony and communication that you provided to the legislators this session. The bill passed with only two votes against in the House: Representative Jamie Cate of Lebanon and Representative Julie Fahey of Eugene. It was sponsored by Senator Kathleen Taylor, Senator Cedric Hayden and Senator David Brock Smith as chief sponsors and Senator Lew Frederick and Representative Boomer Wright as sponsors. Senator Taylor carried the bill in the Senate and Representative Wright carried it in the House. If you are a constituent of any of the legislators who supported his bill, please be sure to thank them for their effort on behalf of our gifted and high-achieving students this session. Legislators really appreciate the occasional word of appreciation amid a blizzard of criticism! I am especially grateful to Senator Taylor and to her staff, who have put in a great deal of work behind the scenes. Unfortunately, because it had a referral to the Joint Ways and Means Committee, the prospects for SB 936 are poor at this point because even if it passes the Ways and Means sub-committee and full committee it would still have to survive a vote in the Senate Chamber, which is not holding votes right now due to the lack of a quorum. Thanks to everyone for your hard work! Margaret

Math options from Davidson
Friends: Here are some math references from the Davidson Institute. The Po-Shen Loh live program has a substantial fee, but there are also offline courses available on this site that are less expensive. In addition, Davidson has a list of other math options. However, the list is a few years old and not all the options may still be available. You can find it here: https://www.davidsongifted.org/gifted-blog/mathematically-gifted-students-a-list-of-resources/ Learn From Top Math Talent Across the Country: LIVE, by Po-Shen Loh Po-Shen Loh, a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University and the national coach of the USA International Math Olympiad team, has created a new infrastructure for online learning. The program allows students to learn from brilliant and engaging high schoolers. Registration is open for LIVE summer camp courses. The course format focuses on teaching students how to invent, and come up with their own creative solutions. Although the courses significantly boost performance on math competitions, the teaching environment and content welcomes, encourages, and inspires students who may not have an existing interest in math. Prof. Loh is currently on his 2023 summer math tour. (In the summers of 2021 and 2022, he conducted the largest outdoor solo math tours in human history!)
