OATAG conference update
开云体育Friends: ? A few days ago, James Delisle, our keynote speaker, informed us that although he is recovering well, his doctors have advised him against coming to Oregon for our conference on September 7th. ? Although we will miss Jim, we are –very—pleased and excited to announce that Dr. Michael Postma, who has a great depth of knowledge and experience in gifted education and is a very popular keynote speaker has agreed to step in in Jim’s place. ? Below is a summary of the keynote that he plans to give us—watch for more information about Mike and the great lineup of other conference presenters soon. ? Anxiety and its Impact on Gifted and Twice-Exceptional Children, Teens, and Young Adults ? Living in an uncertain world, today’s children are more anxious than ever. In fact, 1 of every 5 male high-schoolers struggles with chronic anxiety. Within the Gifted/2e population that number is much higher. In this session, Dr. Mike Postma explores how anxiety affects 2E students and what parents and professionals can do to help reduce their worries and nurture growth mindsets. After reviewing the biology, psychology and common sources of anxiety, they will show you how to help 2E children and teens change their relationship to worry, realistically evaluate situations and tolerate unpredictability. You’ll learn practical, useful tools to promote self-soothing and calming down, diminish negative thoughts and inner critics and build lasting strategies for bouncing back and resilience.? If you have any questions about the conference, feel free to contact me at president@... Margaret ? |

Use better data to improve access
开云体育This article from "the 74 million" recommends the same steps we asked for in SB 796. Track student growth broken down by income/ethnicity. This session, it died in Ways and Means because the chair never scheduled it for a hearing. ? Let's get is over the finish line! ? ? ? |

Fordham Institute comment on Affirmative Action notes need for a national k-12 policy
Immediately following the announcement of the Supreme Court’s decision outlawing the use of race in college admissions (see “”), the Biden Administration released a U.S. Department of Education??to “promote educational opportunity and diversity in colleges and universities.” It includes forthcoming guidance to higher education institutions on how to use still-lawful practices to promote diversity, particularly new “measures of adversity” that consider what applicants may have had to overcome. The department also will consider expanding data collections and transparency around admissions factors and convene an “educational opportunity” summit to bring colleges and universities together with students, advocates, and researchers to discuss a way forward.
?
That’s all well and good, but it’s worth noting what was left off the department’s laundry list:?anything?having to do with k-12 education. That’s a huge missed opportunity and one that the administration should urgently work to address. One of the most effective ways to boost college diversity is by building broader, more inclusive paths to educational excellence. And that work starts in kindergarten.

Senator Frederick coffee chat. tomorrow Saturday
?
Friends,?
Senator Frederick will be holding a constituent meeting tomorrow.? If you attend you might ask him to explain the death of SB 596 in the Ways and Means committee and why there is no funding at all for TAG services in light of the many other increases for education this session.
Margaret?
?
"Our chat this Saturday will be at our usual location at Broadway Grill?(1700 NE Broadway) at?9am tomorrow, Saturday, July 8th. We will again be livestreaming the chat on my Facebook page () so you may view it virtually, though technology, and connection quality in particular, may be imperfect.... Since the grill opens at 9am, which is when we are able to get in, and we have to set up the microphones and speakers, please know that we will be a few minutes late getting the stream online. This is our first chat after the legislative session ended and there is much to discuss."? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Yours truly, Senator Lew Frederick |
