update from CT about its summer program, fwd.
Friends:
The Center for Talented Youth has asked that I circulate this update. Their online progam is very well-established. Margaret As the Center for Talented Youth, in close coordination with Johns Hopkins University leadership, continues to actively monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, we are particularly focused on the health and well-being of our community. We are following guidance from the best and most current public health information, as well as the university’s experts in infectious disease, epidemiology, and emergency preparedness. Based on the information we have today, and with the health and safety of our students and staff in mind, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Session 1 of our 2020 Summer Programs, along with all courses at our Hong Kong sites. We know the decision to cancel our Session 1 and Hong Kong-based courses may be disappointing to your studentsand we at CTY will greatly miss welcoming them to our sites for this session. It is something we plan for all year, and seeing these remarkable students grow, discover, and engage with one another is one of the greatest and most rewarding expressions of our mission. We are confident, however, that this decision is in the best interests of our CTY community. We have shared with families via email options for Session 1 refunds. Specific information for Session 1 families with financial aid awards was also communicated via email. Our can be found online, as well. At this time, we are still cautiously planning to operate our Session 2 courses, the earliest of which begin on July 12. As the situation continues to evolve, we will update Summer Programs familiesand youas we have new information. You can refer to our at any time. We are still actively working to find ways to serve students, even if we cannot do so at summer sites. Our excellent are increasing capacity to serve families facing long-term school closures. We’re also exploring new, virtual ways to support families coping with this unprecedented situation. Please stay tuned for more information as those offerings are developed and don’t hesitate to reach out to us at ctyinfo@... should you need anything. We appreciate your continued support of CTY. Please take good care of yourselves, your families, and neighbors as we navigate this situation together. Sincerely, Luke Kasim Director of Recruitment |

math/science learning links
Friends:
Here are some additional national math/science learning links. The first two links are for large collections of YouTube videos that students can watch by themselves (although I recommend parental supervision). The third is to Science Friday's Citizen Science Month. This describes and links to many real science projects such as observing light pollution or reporting on water quality that have been set up so families can contribute to the research. Some have been turned into games. "3blue1brown," by Grant Sanderson, is a set of YouTube videos that uses animations and entertainment to explain complex math concepts/fields such as exponential growth, neural networks, differential equations and topology. "Numberphile": by Brady Haran: another set of YouTube videos, featuring interviews with working mathematicians about math discoveries old and new. "Citizen Science Month" (April) on Science Friday: including the Citizen Science Project Starter: Real science research--many from home--that families or classrooms can particpate in. Margaret |
ODE guidance on distance learning
Friends:
Please share this with your families and schools and let us know how we can help! Below is the TAG section from the Department of Education's guidance document on distance learning. The OATAG website has some home learning resources in English and Spanish at Talented and Gifted (TAG) Guidance "Districts should serve students identified as TAG by accommodating assessed levels of learning and accelerated rates of learning. With a distance learning model, two strategies that will enhance and extend the learning experience for TAG students, include: Educational acceleration, which has long been used to match high-level studentsgeneral abilities and specific talents with optimal learning opportunities; and Curriculum compacting, which condenses, modifies, or streamlines curriculum to reduce repetition of previously mastered material." |

Nicholas Kristof: Who Killed Keylan Knapp?
Friends:
Below is an excerpt from Nicholas Kristof's column from today's New York Times. It returns to a family in Yamhill County, where he grew up. Kristof believes that "modest interventions" might have saved the children in this family but when he lists possible interventions it simply doesn't occur to him that doing a better job of gifted eduation in rural Oregon communities might also have made a difference. This was a child who could have gone to college with a full ride scholarship instead of to prison if he had had more support from his school district ----before-- he dropped out. Margaret Who Killed Keylan Knapp? My childhood friend has joined Americas deaths of despair. "... Keylan was very bright, and he was promoted three grades in math class at Yamhill Grade School, so that as a fifth grader he studied math with the eighth graders, his feet swinging without reaching the floor, and he still outperformed most of the older children. Yet he dropped out of high school, like all the Knapp kids, and they then all struggled in a changing job market. Good union jobs like their dads were disappearing, and each of the children self-medicated with drugs and alcohol. The State of Oregon spent hundreds of thousands of dollars prosecuting and incarcerating Keylan (and later his only son as well), but I wonder if modest interventions might have put him on a sounder path: early childhood education, counseling, job training, drug treatment...." |
