X6100 uses ALC to protect output transistor from overloading/high SWR. Few times, when my antenna accidentally wasn't connected properly and I tried to transmit - I seen SWR ~ 40 on the display of my amplifier (>10 on the X6100). It was short transmission, about 1 second, but after reconnecting antenna transceiver worked fine.?
Auto tuning was designed to adjust various antenna/feeder impedance to 50 Omh. High antenna SWR is fine for tuner.

Regarding amplifier - I'm using MicroPA 50+. It's cheaper and has less output power (-3 dBm or 0.5 step of s-meter). Also - there is not tuner built-in. Few time I fry output transistor with working on FT8, but they are relatively cheap.

r1cbu: you can take a look here
GPS: I don't know. Seems, all available drivers already enabled in the linux kernel. I'm using U-blox7
