Setting up WSJT-X with the X6100 (CAT and USB Audio)
#Digital
#r1cbu
I finally got around to trying out my X6100 on FT8 using WSJT-X running on Windows 10.?
I had a bit of a struggle to find setup instructions that actually worked but I had success following the recommendations in this video. I recommend that if you are trying to get WSJT-X setup to work with the X6100 on Windows that you follow these instructions :? Note that he is running the Xiegu firmware but the same settings worked great for me while running the R1CBU V0.17.0 firmware as well. You definitely want to use the lower numbered COM port (there will be two) for CAT and of course if you are using a newer version of WSJT-X that has a configuration for the X6100 use that instead of the X108G setting. Attached is a snapshop of the settings that I ended up with for CAT. Sorry it is grainy as I just snapped it with my phone instead of doing a screen capture. Note that your COM port number will be specific to your system.? Cheers Michael VE3WMB?? P.S. I am still trying to figure out the optimal TX audio level settings based on the ALC reading while running the R1CBU firmware. It doesn't look like it will be zero. However the default settings within the firmware for audio in and out levels seem to be very? good.? ? |

Using the lowest number port doesn't seem to always work. Try it and if it doesn't work then try the other COM port.? I also got WSJT-X and X6100 CAT control working on a Raspberry Pi but whether or not it will work depends a lot on the version of WSJT-X (and thus how current the Hamlib support? is).? Some experimentation may be needed. Hopefully the X6100? CAT support in? Hamlib and FLRIG will stabilize over time so we won't have to worry about what versions work or don't.? Michael? |
ttyACM1 is the cat control + PTT and ttyACM0 is for using minicom to login to the x6100. I used to use flrig and point all my digital apps to use flrig. But lately flrig hasn't been working too well for some reason. I don't know why. So ... I found out that by using hamlib (latest version) EVERYTHING works. It works for wsjtx, js8call, and fldigi so: $ rigctl -l | grep -i xiegu # shows all xiegu radios .. x6100 in particular: 3087 ?Xiegu ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?X6100 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 20230109.4 ? ? ?Stable ? ? ?RIG_MODEL_X6100 $ rigctld -m 3087 -r /dev/ttyACM1 -s 19200 -C stopbits=1 & then just use hamlib or rigctl in your apps: EVEN fldigi works. On split operation, I use fake it instead of none. You can just go with default on all three data bit settings (no memorization required). Audio shows as Cmedia input/ouput. |

Hi Sam, yes, this behaviour can arise and I noticed it depends on the audio level set on the slider on the right of the wsjtx panel that if too high may corrupt the cat connection between PC/usb and X6100. It happens that the connection changes from ttyACM1 to ttyACM2 so if you reconfigure to ttyACM2 in placde of ttyACM1 the connection resumes. You can also replug the USB C cable to get the connection resume to ttyACM1. All this happens with Linux PC, I do not know what happens on Windows connections. In addition I can say that it is always necessary a lot of tinkering on this audio level to get the connection working every time I power up the rig to initiate a new session. Note: above description applies to factory firmware, I never tried wsitx on Oleg's.

The other day, I was testing a new antenna, and I had my touchpad on my Linux computer freeze up during TX from wsjt-x. I realized maybe some current was coming back from the antenna, so I wrapped a few turns of narrow coax through a toroid near the antenna, and it alleviated the problem with the touchpad. I've also experienced that problem of a high audio occasionally causing the USB connection to drop. Now I wonder if that too was some concrete proof that I needed a current balun in the feed line.? Over 2 years ?have certainly seen RF issues on the USB and the Coax using EFHW antenna. I almost always run my USB through a toroid a few times to stop issues. I have clip on ferrites on my CW paddle also to stop keyed errors.
No big deal, I have a ?100 Yaesu USB camera microphone for my FT3 that had a clip on ferrite fitted by Yaesu to stop issues. With a well tuned vertical I get no issues though, only on the EFHW |
