I/Q Output?
leslie
No doubt this has been raised before but I can't seem to find the answer.
There is an I/Q port on the side of the unit. This is a new unit manufactured 12/24 with the latest firmware.
There does not appear to be a softkey to enable IQ output.
Based on measurement with an oscilloscope, there is nothing happening at the I/Q port by default. Is it possible to get an I/Q output from an X6100? |
If the X6100 (re-)uses the mixer circuit of the G90, and after all what I have seen, this is highly probable, then the I and Q signals are taken directly off the mixers without any further amplification. Depending on band conditions, expect an output voltage in the low mV range. For my G90 I used the Mic input of the soundcard integrated into my netbook, and had to turn up the gain to see anything in the HDSDR waterfall.
?
Keep in mind that the I/Q input works both ways - if the connection to the soundcard collects noise, I expect it to show up in the G90/X6100 waterfall.

I went a bit further on this and injected a -70 dBm signal from a signal generator. The signal is clearly seen on the spectrum and waterfall displays. For a CW signal, as the frequency of the receiver is tuned near the frequency of the input signal, a tone is heard on the speaker. That same tone = baseband, would be expected at the I/Q output but there is no AC signal at the I/Q output - even checking for low levels down to millivolts with an oscilloscope. So, I'm still confused about the Xiegu I/Q port. There is a port. Why is its function not clearly specified? In general, as I experiment with this radio and also find there is no direct Tech support from the company, I'm headed toward concluding that this may soon be a returned item through Amazon. |
Reading this thread /g/xiegu-x6100/topic/96325279 it looks like older versions of the Xiegu firmware (1.1.5) used to have an option in the 'RADIO SETTINGS2' menu to enable I/Q output.
I just looked at my X6100 (app version 1.1.9) and I don't see that option, so I suspect Xiegu removed it.
?
I don't think the new X6200 has even an I/Q port, which makes me think the people at Xiegu thought it was of little use (or perhaps it had problems, and it was just easier for them to remove it from the menu and the baseband firmware).
?
I think it is still possible to download 1.1.5 to see if I/Q output works with it, but I wouldn't use it for normal radio operations since it is so old.

I just tested it: there is a signal on the IQ output, and there is no need to switch on anything. As suspected, the signal is very weak - it is taken direct from the mixers. Since all of the gain of a direct mixing receiver is in the audio stages, the levels at the mixers are extremely weak. I had to turn up the mic gain of the soundcard to maximum (30dB!) to see anything in Linrad. An S9 signal is 50uV by definition - so if the mixer gain is 0dB, you should see an audio signal of 50uV - most oscilloscopes would only show noise at that level. Try an S9+40dB signal - then you should see something on the scope screen. Or better yet - use a SDR software like HDSDR.

My system: APP V1.1.9, BASE V1.1.8, Xiegu software (R1CBU also works).
