R1CBU firmware does not load

Hello all, new X6100 user here. So far it seems like it is an awesome radio and I am looking forward to some QRP in the great outdoors!

I would like to try the R1CBU firmware on my new radio but it will not boot.

I have tried both V18 and V19. Both will open the logo screen (howling wolf?) and then they freeze and don't go any further. I have waited 10-15 minutes I assume that is long enough?

My X6100 came from Radioddity with the most recent firmware and base. Just to be sure I did reload both. FYI I used the same micro SD card for this and it worked so presumably my card is OK.

I have tried using both Rufus and BalenEtcher to load the boot image to the sd card. Both give the same result.

Thanks for any advice you might be able to offer.

Hello Michael,

It would be useful if you had stated the exact firmware version. When writing an image to a SD, it useful to observe file sizes. Before unzipping and after unzipping. Oleg has the file size of the zipped file on his site. Because corruption of files do occur. Should a file fail to behave as you expect then try downloading it again and start with a fresh image. ?

Now I recall a similar message to yours some time ago. I just did a quick search and couldn't find it. But look in the list's archive. As I can't recall what the solution was to resolve the issue.

Thanks and i am happy to give you the additional information i should have thought ahead on that.

?

My radio is firmware version APP V1.1.7 Aug 25 2023,15:09:40 and Base V1.1.6 Mar 7 2023, 09:57:03

?

For the zip files, the V19 I downloaded is x6100_r1cbu_v0.19.0_sdcard,? file size 148,818kb and V18 is x6100_r1cbu_v18.0_sdcard, file size 143,651kb.

?

Unzipped, the V19 file is same name, file size is 1,082,368kb, and the V18 is same file name, 1,082,368kb.?

?

Curious are they both supposed to be the same size when unzipped?

?

Also, neither zip file matches the file size stated on the R1CBU download page.

?

FYI, these are the sizes of the files that I just downloaded again this morning, however they do match exactly with the files that I downloaded previously.

?

I burned both versions to my sd card and once again neither will complete boot up on my radio.

?

Again, thanks for any help figuring this out.

Ok, maybe it's just something simple. Did you push the SD card in gently until you hear/ feel a click?
You can tell if it was done right, if you have to push card in to release and pull out.
Just a thought.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion but I did that.
The radio does have a nice sd mechanism vs some others with just a cheap slot you have to dig it out of which IMHO speaks to the overall quality.

Hello Michael,

My Mac reports the unzipped file is:?1,108,344,832 bytes (1.11 GB on disk) Size. This image worked here. I cannot comment upon the firmware versions you have but I think they are up-to-date.

Thanks for that. I dl'd on my Mac - my usual machine but I keep a Win10 laptop for radio stuff - and it reports exactly the same size for the V19 unzipped .img file as well.

I am going to get it over onto the micro sd and see if that works.

Thanks again.

Still no joy! Despite using what appears to be the correct file it still does not boot up.

When I start the radio with the sd card, I get a quick flash of the linux boot screen. Then the logo screen appears with a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner. Then the cursor disappears and the logo screen just freezes. I will keep trying different things and appreciate any more ideas. TIA.

Connect the USB (dev) to the computer and open the first COM port that appears through the terminal program.
When you turn it on, there should be information about the boot process. Then copy-paste this log here or send me a private message

If you have another SD card to try ( preferably from a different brand )? , I've had situations where otherwise functional cards on one device, just don't want to work on another... I think I've even experienced it with my x6100... Different card ( "from my pile" ) , flash the same file and the issue went away...

Not really a satisfying answer, but perhaps something to try, that might get you on to playing radio with Oleg's great alternative x6100 firmware!

I've seen this in an extreme way on the 6100.? One SD card boots and run fine.? Another boots normally, but has severe lag when moving between the auto-mode boundaries on the VFO and will eventually hang requiring a long power press to power down.?

I agree on the micro SD card issue. I went through 4 of them yesterday before I got one that would take 1/2 it's rated data capacity.

Oleg, many thanks for your comment. I tried a better sd card first as that seemed pretty easy and another comment made it seem quite likely my problem. Failing that I was going to get them connected and capture that log file for you.

Many thanks Richard N1RBD. Your comment twigged with me as I did find it took a very long - 30-40 seconds to power down the radio when it was hung up on boot. A better sd card was the issue. Thanks as well to everyone else who suggested the sd card issue and other helpful ideas. I found a better, Sandisk card it it is working perfectly.

Hi Georgina,
you can use Balena Etcher for Mac () and burn the zipped file from it. So no need to unzip the image, etc. It is a safer way to do and it always worked flawlessly for me.

Hello Andrea,

I don't have any problem writing images I have done it for years using dd. Being a blind ham such apps as you suggest are not accessible. I looked at Etcher a couple of years ago, so it might have been made accessible. But developers are usually ignorant of how screen readers work.

The point remains, it is important to observe the file size matches as stated on the website as well as using a checksum if a hash has been provided.

I was very skeptical of the posts about different sd cards brands being the problem with startup. Now, I'm a believer. I was using samsung, which I thought was very good quality, and was having a lot of trouble getting a bootup. Switched to sandisk, and it's working like a charm.

I echo that, I use Sandisk exclusively and I’ve never had any issues with any card I’ve owned.? I know of several instances where people used off brand cards and had trouble until they switched to a quality card.? I’m sure other name brands are fine as well but stay away from the cheap ones.

Not everything is so simple. I have several very cheap Chinese SD cards in my work. And everything works flawlessly. As for the X6100, there is a suspicion that there are peculiarities in the implementation of the SD interface. It might make sense to try to programmatically limit the speed of working with SD, maybe this will help. But this needs to be explored.

?I'm using MicroCenter "buy at the register" cards and it boots fine.? Will not boot from a Kingston.
