I’m less familiar with the problem of XEphem having trouble finding the “auxil” directory, but you might contact the Jay's Cafe folks directly about getting their instructions updated (I’ve not, myself, heard of that site before).

is there a way to get at the content of disk2 and disk3 from the
download page when one does not have a mac?
