XEphem in WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux)?

Dear XEphem enthusiasts,

Is it possible (and hopefully, not too difficult) to install and run XEphem in the Windows Subsystem for Linux? Have you ever heard of someone trying this?

Yours,
Maxime

Hello Maxime,

Nice to hear from you.?

It is an interesting idea but I have not tried. The first challenge that comes to mind is building the Motif library, that has never been easy even on Linux. Then you need X11 libs, also not easy, then an X Server which should be the easiest part.

Stay well and my wishes for a better 2021!

Elwood

should be easy enough - install openSUSE in WSL, install the XEphem RPM from
OBS, done.

Cheers

oh, one thing though: you need an X server on windows and all that - I use
mobaXterm for that. works like a charm - install, open WSL session inside
mobaXterm, run X apps.

Thanks for the info. I don't know anything about WSL. I imagined it was already?some minimal?distro assembled by MS. But if you can load any distro you want then, yes, it should be quite simple.

But I have needed a WIndows X server before and I found? worked for me.

Cheers!

By the way a little offtopic, I wrote in my blurt blog an article about the Jupiter and Saturn conjuntion, and used some screenshoots from my Xephem on FreeBSD 12.1 and KDE5 Plasma, and also put a link to your site for those interested on downloading xephem.

The article is for begginers and amateurs.

You can check it down here (the article is in Spanish).
