Greetings all,

My web master has installed a simple group discussion tool on our
server named Cyphor. Though still a little green and certainly not as
flexible as this Yahoo! facility, it has the advantage that it is
completely under my control :-). Overall I believe it has good
potential and I have quickly grown to like it. I have set up a few
discussion topics to establish some context. I have not yet announced
it on the main XEphem web page. If a few brave soles from this Group
would care to give it a test drive, you can access it at
. If the trial period
goes well, I am likely to christen it the primary XEphem community
watering hole. I welcome your comments.

Once you get it working to your satisfaction, I'll dissolve this group in
favor of yours. Please let me know when you wish to take over the reins of
the mailing list. It's been fun but I must defer to any decision Elwood
makes. It's an honor to be an XEphem user.

I've been involved in UNIX for over 20 years. I've always wished
for the day when I could run UNIX on a laptop. RedHat Linux solved that
problem. Next, I wanted a comprehensive astronomy program that I could run
under Linux on the laptop. I've look most of the astronomy programs
available for Linux and other UNIXs and found that none of them had the
level of sophistication that the Windows-based astro programs have. Then I
discovered XEphem. XEphem has the level of sophistication that I've always
wanted.I can now take my Linux laptop out to the site and have XEphem at
the scope. To me the Laptop/Linux/XEphem combination at the scope is
unbeatable. I have been using Starry Night Pro on the laptop but I havent
touched it since I got XEphem.

Secondly, I'm impressed with your level of support. At least in my
case all my questions have been answered quickly and accurately. No matter
how stupid I thought the question was, you have always answered in a
profession manner. I think that's a big plus.

In summary XEphem is the UNIX-based astronomy program that I've
been waiting for all my life. :)
