Tangent Plane?

What Earth model is used to generate a tangent plane for AZ/EL
coordinates? Is it a Geoid datum, or an ellipsoid?

Thanks,
Chris Maness

Hi Chris,

The basic astronomical ephemeris engine used by most of XEphem uses the ellipsoid, but the satellite propagator uses the Geoid datum. No explicit attempt is made to reconcile the two where they meet.

Yes because I was checking the data with the transit by spirit leveling. And the Geoid would be best for that. However it was within a minute accuracy anyhow.? I'm not completely sure of the azimuth but I imagine the vertical would be more sensitive to deflection anyhow.

Chris?
