UCAC4, edbs with Mac, Xephem 3.7.7
Using Xephem 3.7.7 on Mac,? OS 10.9.5 (recent update). ? ? Have? been using UCAC* in last several versions of XEphem, usually works o.k.,? but currently doesn't. All of the folders auxil, catalogs, help, etc. are in ~/Library/XEphem,? and my home directory has the .xephem directory containing the file XEphem, first line: XEphem.ShareDir: /Users/ameyer/Library/XEphem/ What's weird to me is that I have GSC 2.201 in the catalogs folder there, and Xephem finds that catalog o.k., using the path given in the Field Stars setup panel? (/Users/ameyer/Library/XEphem/catalogs/GSC2201.?? I have the full stock set of .edbs, and several custom ones, in Library/XEphem.? Any .edb file that I? "demote" into the catalogs folder disappears from the Data-FIles list of .edbs.?? As for UCAC4, I've tried it both ways, I've tried naming the folder UCAC4 instead of UCAC.? In each case modified the path in the Field Stars setup panel accordingly, re-started Xephem, zoomed in to ~1 degree, but still no go.?? If the path in the Field Stars setup panel is not right, the message is something like "Can not find u2index.da or u3index.unf or u4index.unf",? as expected, since they are needed first to select the data.? When the path is right, the error message changes to just "UCAC:? Error reading UCAC data near 15:30? 26:00",? with the coordinate string matching the current FOV center.?? So apparently Xephem is using the path, and finding an index file to use (presumably u4index.unf), but somehow can't read the data.?? I've tried it with "u4index.unf" both inside the u4i folder, and outside it, just in the UCAC folder.? Same error message either way. I seem to recall a couple versions of Mac OS and/or of XEphem back when Elwood said that the catalogs, edbs, etc.? should be in Library/XEphem, and adopted that.?? But maybe it still shouldn't matter, as long as the ShareDir path in? ~/.xephem/XEphem? is correct, as the install instructions say.?? So wondering with my recent OS update if this is due to some "feature" of OS 10.9.5.??? I've run out of dumb guesses, and it probably is something trivial in the setup, so hoping for a silver bullet from anyone out there.? |

Re: XEphem 3.7.7 under Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
Hi Sam,
I tried to reply to your email several times from two different systems but every time speakeasy rejected my email. You might want to check into this. But anyway, I don't have much useful info for you. Yours is the first report I've seen about trouble with XEphem on El Capitan. I run it here all the time with no problems also. The only thing I can think of is an issue with your xquartz installation. Can you run xlogo ok? You might try removing it and installing fresh from xquartz.org. Maybe running XEphem from a terminal would give more clues. Cd to where you copied the XEphem.app folder, then run?XEphem.app/Contents/Resources/xephem/bin/osx/xephem and see what that says.
If you can't get it working, let me know and I'll refund your purchase in full, no worries. Elwood ? |

Re: XEphem 3.7.7 under Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
开云体育Hello Sam,I have installed and working xephem 3.7.7 under a macbook (early 2009) running OS X 10.11.1 (Last version of El Capitan). I think you should to check the path of the binary file and directories and the XEphem file that pointed out to those files. On Mac OS X 10.11 and so on the XEphem file should be in:?/opt/X11/share/X11/app-defaults/XEphem. This file tells the application where to look for the resource directories. But you should verify where the application binary is located. You can use the “which” ?command in a terminal to check that. Open a terminal and put this command on it: which xephem. The command have to return a line with the path of the application, for instance, in my machine: /usr/local/bin/xephem Obviously, “/usr/local” should be in the path. If you know all this stuff, then check directly the binary, trying to execute the application from its bin directory, with the command ./xephem. I hope this help. Best, Emilio Ortiz
