Well, you dont mention how you got 3.5.2. I assume a source archive.
Just make sure that you dont have an old lx200xed hanging around
and are definately using the one from 3.5.2.

Just type 'make' in the tools/lx200xed directory and put the binary
someplace.

Oh yes, it has been done many times before. It even works quite
well.
Trouble is, XEphem is not GPL and Red Hat (who bought Cygnus)
strictly
prohibits using Cygwin runtime libs in non-GPL applications. I know
because I've pleaded with them several times about this. Even though
the source to XEphem is given away at no charge, that is not good
enough for them. The only way one may legally use the Cygwin libs
in a
non-GPL app is to purchase a "buy out" license for, get this,
$100,000.

FWIW, this issue is a big part of why the Windows edition is so much
more expensive. I use the MKS Enterprise porting tool (which is
totally fantastic by the way) but I have to pay them $100 for each
CD
I sell. I also pay a fee for the X server that I bundle. So I
actually
clear very little on the Windows edition but I hope it is a valuable
marketing position to be "cross-platform".

Strange, seems to be a bug in the glibc library, apparently it does

Yes, this appears to be unique to RH; even after installing both their

5.5.1, SGI/IRIX 6.5 and FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE and they each work
correctly: reports WDT as UTC-3.

Well, it is an equivalent of the old option "Now" in XEphem,
pity that it can't be used any more.
Please elaborate. XEphem always comes up at the current time.

Has anyone attempted to port the xephem software to Cygwin? It looks
like it can be done with some time and effort but wondered if someone
has already attempted.

I have xephem running quite well on my Linux box but want it to be on
my laptop as well. I am using the following:

Cygwin: 1.3.6
Xclients & libs: XFree86 X11R6 and X11R6.4 ( the .4 rev. I downloaded
doesn't have all the same packages )
X server: Hummingbird eXceed

I'm willing to put in the time on this myself, if there is interest,
but I didn't want to work on something that's already been done.

Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers!

have summertime here, so the DST acronym should be shown and

the same WST/4 settings in the main window. So something seems to be wrong here.

The older versions (at least up to 3.2) allowed for having the
time zone read from the system (at least on some systems like
Solaris, Linux). This, unfortunately, seems to be unavailable now, unless I was simply not clever enough to find it. At least, I tried to put the old preferences entry
XEphem.JD: Now

Re: xephem 3.5.2 window problems

Stephen Binks

Ok... here's the details

I believe I upgraded from RH7.1 to 7.2 since originally building 3.5.1

While the original 3.5.1 worked fine with RH7.2, a fresh build of 3.5.1
didn't. It behaved the same as 3.5.2

I already had openmotif 2.1.30-8 installed but I discovered that I also
had lesstif (0.92 I think).

I removed lesstif and tried rebuilding Xephem 3.5.1 but the build
failed. Re-installing openmotif (rpm -Uvh --force openmotif*) allowed
3.5.1 to build and work correctly.

3.5.2 also builds and works well now.

Thanks for your help everyone and to you Elwood for a wonderful piece of
software.

Thanks for the report. No, this is the first I have heard of this. The
only changes to window control from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2 were to the
Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus views so they no longer caused XEphem to
crash with some window managers (including Sawfish). These changes
fixed a bona fide bug common to these three windows that had been
there for years, it was not just a trial change. So it is puzzling to
hear a report that suggests a broader windowing issue has been
introduced. I would like to discuss some ideas to help me figure this
out.

1. Was the 3.5.1 binary that works ok also built on the same RH 7.2
system, with the same versions of gcc and Motif and run with the same
version of Sawfish? In other words, are we certain the only change
here was XEphem itself?

2. I see at www.redhat.com there has been two updates issued for the C
library for 7.2. I doubt this is the problem but it might be a good
idea to install these if you haven't already and rebuild both 3.5.1
and 3.5.2.

3. Have you tried other desktops, window managers, themes, etc? Most
of my testing is with KDE and FVWM2.

4. Window managers add their decorations around the application's
window by creating their own window slightly larger than the one
created by the app and reparenting so it appears behind the app's
window. It sounds like when XEphem is closed (via the decoration) that
XEphem does remove its own window ok but the window manager does not
then remove its window. Since the latter is the responsibility of the
window manager, it sounds like there might be some sort of missing or
broken handshake between the app and the window manager. This
handshake is handled automatically by Motif (via Xlib) so if this
really is the problem there is little I can do. If you are using
lesstif you might try openmotif (or v.v.) as way to explore this
possibility.

If anyone else has additional ideas, please join in.

Yes, the Windows edition works identically in all respects as the UNIX
edition. You can step time along to look for any phenomena you wish,
including specific Lunar elongation, phase, Solar separation etc. You
can also plot functions for visual exploration and enter equations to
be solved automatically for the specific circumstances you are
seeking.

One of my competitors is working on the earth's aberration from the
eccliptic. At least I think that's what he means. I gather there is
a
slight daily or occasional move or wobble in the earth's daily
rotation?

From his site:

"...When earth rotates on its own axis, with an inclination of 23.5
degree, due to unknown reasons, the degree gets tilted during some
days and gets back to normal, which activate the molten lava to
push
the mantle. In other words, the drifting of the inclination angle
of
the earth and its automatic set right to its original position,
....."

The Earth does not depart from the mean Ecliptic plane by more than an
arc second for the next several centuries so XEphem just sets this to
zero. But I suspect what you are really discussing here is nutation,
which is the slight wobble of the Earth's axis on a time scale of days
to weeks that is superimposed on the long term precession of the
orbital axis which requires some 26,000 years for one cycle. XEphem
does properly account for both these phenomena when computing apparent
place, but they are not listed explicitly so you would have to back
them out yourself by inspecting the apparent coordinates of a fixed
star over time.
