new discussion group formed on XEphem home site
Hello all,
This is a note to say I have finished the preliminary shakedown tests and am now going live with my own discussion group, hosted on the same web server as the XEphem site. You are invited to register at:
I appreciate the enthusiam shown for XEphem at this egroup. In no way does creating my own facility imply any dissatisfaction here. Indeed, this facility offers more functionality than does my own. I just believe that by focusing my attention on one group I can be more effective, and what better place to host such a group than on my own web server. If there are any technical problems, please contact me directly right way.
Thank you, hope to see you there.
Elwood ecdowney@...
PS. Many thanks to my web master, John Huggins, for his excellent service.

I never thought anyone would consider it an "honor" to use XEphem. XEphem is mostly just driven by my own personal requirements. To the extent these are typical others find the program useful, but I should think it remains lacking in some way in regards to each persons needs. If you wish, I would like to hear a few reasons why you are so enthralled with XEphem. I've been involved in UNIX for over 20 years. I've always wished for the day when I could run UNIX on a laptop. RedHat Linux solved that problem. Next, I wanted a comprehensive astronomy program that I could run under Linux on the laptop. I've look most of the astronomy programs available for Linux and other UNIXs and found that none of them had the level of sophistication that the Windows-based astro programs have. Then I discovered XEphem. XEphem has the level of sophistication that I've always wanted.I can now take my Linux laptop out to the site and have XEphem at the scope. To me the Laptop/Linux/XEphem combination at the scope is unbeatable. I have been using Starry Night Pro on the laptop but I havent touched it since I got XEphem. Secondly, I'm impressed with your level of support. At least in my case all my questions have been answered quickly and accurately. No matter how stupid I thought the question was, you have always answered in a profession manner. I think that's a big plus. In summary XEphem is the UNIX-based astronomy program that I've been waiting for all my life. :) -- John Perry perry@... PGP-encrypted e-mail welcome! PGP/GPG key 164BDBAE

trying my own discussion group
Greetings all,
My web master has installed a simple group discussion tool on our server named Cyphor. Though still a little green and certainly not as flexible as this Yahoo! facility, it has the advantage that it is completely under my control :-). Overall I believe it has good potential and I have quickly grown to like it. I have set up a few discussion topics to establish some context. I have not yet announced it on the main XEphem web page. If a few brave soles from this Group would care to give it a test drive, you can access it at . If the trial period goes well, I am likely to christen it the primary XEphem community watering hole. I welcome your comments.

So now that you have it working how are you liking 3.4? I played with it a lot yesterday. I think it's great!
Seems ok, but after using older versions for several years it going to take a little getting use to all changes. -- clear skies, | Joe | |Encrypted with ROT-26 - all attempts to decrypt |are illegal under the DMCA!

Retrofitting the USNO catalogs?

What's the best way to add the USNO catalogs off the CD if you choose not to install them during the original installation of XEphem?

Well I went to egroups this morning to find out that Yahoo has taken over Egroups. The xephem@... address will continue to work but there is also a new address, xephem@.... There was some new functionality on the page that allowed me to add the XEphem graphic from Elwood's page to the Yahoo page. The new chat room seems to be much nicer too.

Re: How do you use XEphem?
Joe Hartley writes: "John Perry" <perry@...> wrote: Does anyone want to just introduce themselves?
Hi, folks. I've just found this list and signed on. I'm the technical director at the Frosty Drew Observatory (FDO - )
Hiya, Might as well introduce myself too. I am, or I should say, was a "tenured" graduate student until the end of last year. I now have my Ph.D. in Comp Scie, but no job yet, which means no bigger scope yet either (or a CD copy of XEphem). I got started with this hobby in earnest last May. Trigger was a small program for the Palm called Planetarium, I really recommend it highly (see my links on ). I then discovered XEphem and got it running on my Linux box. Once I had that, I got a pair of 10x50 binocs and started looking around the night sky, often with charts drawn with XEphem. After a month or two of that I got an ST80 (Celestron). As I use Linux all the time I have been using XEphem regularly (v3.2.3) and I really like it. I look forward to getting the latest version on CD as soon as I am gainfully employed :-) My next scope will most likely be an Orion XT-8 (Dobsian), but it will have to wait for the job and move. That's about it. Oh yea, I'm in Iowa, where it's COLD in the winter. Esmail PS: I also compiled and run v3.2.3 successfully on an SGI Indy, just for testing purposes. -- Esmail Bonakdarian - esmail@... -
