hello nerd(s?) 4
hah it's just you and me in here i guess anyway i added my config snippet to the doco https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jB-yheBf5b0_NSjXJPaOiZ8WwdlgkCjUvM1iQy-c3VM/edit# let me know when you want to try linking up :D i'm in pacific time and evenings are best for me. i generally have my equipment powered down because of noise but all the configs are saved so it comes up quickly enough. -- ?strid smith (she/her) =<[ c y b e r ]>=

I finally have an operational router. 2
The 7204VXR is finally set-up, and I've configured my CPE to forward TCP port 1998 to it. When scanned it from another host on the LAN, it seems to be listening on that port, after I configured X.25 as Astrid documented. Please contact me directly for my static IP. -Meghan

Joining the network 3
All, Trying to get my Cisco 2600 working. I put in some X.25 routing rules as: x25 routing x25 route 752 xot 24.22.130.236 (my Cisco does not understand x25 route ... dns) x25 route 242 xot 216.239.32.21 If I then do: x28 call 75241001 It sends packets but gets no response. I see in Packet capture: 14:51:24.542896 IP 104.58.86.73.11021 > 24.22.130.236.1998: Flags [S], seq 599537706, win 4128, options [mss 536], length 0 14:51:26.541877 IP 104.58.86.73.11021 > 24.22.130.236.1998: Flags [S], seq 599537706, win 4128, options [mss 536], length 0 DNS notes: Lab-Router(config)#x25 route (...)(...).. xot ? A.B.C.D Address of remote XOT host However reversing the logic gives me: Non-authoritative answer: 410.752.x25.org canonical name = 5fc5.ddns.net. Name: 5fc5.ddns.net Address: 24.22.130.236 So I assume I am right and its trying to connect, but per the notes this might be down. I will try to get a gateway external accessible once I have figured out how to make X.25 work in RSX11M.

[VoIP] X.25 + C*NET 4
sorry if this topic feels offtopic for the c*net list, everyone. :) true fact: i started looking into x.25 because i was curious about temporary signalling connections and how they work on the Definity. i wondered whether it would be possible to bolt on a data network next to the existing c*net voice network to facilitate transparent isdn interworking. sort of like how the PSTN was slowly transitioned from vf-only to a dual vf/packet network with ss6 and later ss7. my thinking went: if things can be made to work that way, two c*net-connected pbxes, each with local pri's homing on router that splits/recombines all the datastreams properly, might could think they're speaking end-to-end isdn, not even noticing anything unusual! that would be neat. so i started gathering equipment and learning how it all fits together. got a bit sidetracked though, haven't yet gotten around to answering that first question one way or the other. it does seem that you can statically configure a set of Definity pbx's into a larger network in a non-isdn environment, using regular vf telephone trunks and sending the signalling traffic over X.25. haven't gotten that to work properly yet either but i'm pretty close. -- ?strid smith (she/her) =<[ c y b e r ]>= antique telephone collectors association member #4870

Linux and X.25 13
Hi, Does anyone have any experience with X.25 on Linux? I'm doing a lot of reading about X.25 on Linux, particularly X.25 via LAPB over Ethernet and X.25 over asynchronous serial. This is involving a lot of archeology and really old archives of things form the late '90s / early '00s. I wondering if / hoping I can establish an XOT connection with ?strid's Telebahn and then switch (term?) to multiple things local to my LAN. -- Grant. . . . unix || die

Hello and is anything always on in the Telebahn 3
My first email on this, new to me group. I’m John, a retired network architect from Siemens Healthineers with a minor obsession in telephone switching system. Back in the early 1980’s, I was a technical instructor for a third party computer maintenance company (Sorbus) when we got a contract with GTE to perform installation and trouble resolution services for their Telenet X.25 network. Most of the work expected by our technician would include installing modems or 56K DSU’s at the GTE hub sites that contained the TP4000 X.25 backbone network switch, installing PAD’s at GTE customer locations, and being smart hands ( the term certainly didn’t exist back then !!! ) when repairs on the TP4000’s were required. Now Sorbus had zero experience in telecommunication or networking so the class I taught had to go from punching down wires on 66 blocks, to what a modem was and naturally, we wanted to provide an overview of what X.25 and what Telenet were. I went to McLean VA for I think 6 weeks to sit through two of their 2-week courses with 2 weeks of mostly one-on-one time with GTE’s inhouse instructors. I bought a book on X.25 before the visit to VA and was fascinated. The network bug bit me and bit me hard and I enjoyed decades working in networking. I don’t believe I ever used any X.25 network except for lab systems in those two classes in VA so I have zero practical or end-user experience but I’m confident I can get the networking part going pretty easily and figure out the rest while on the ride. I do have a question. Are there any devices that are always on on the x25.org network that I can make connections to? If so, please provide numbers. Thanks! John

Howdy y'all: I was browsing some SGI documentation, and I was flabbergasted to see SGI had an X.25 product. I may be a bit biased because I'm an SGI fanboy, but I really like their documentation. It's a little easier to digest and get things going. I think I'm going to try and source a dremel so I can get this motherboard out of my Challenge S and make that an X.25 node! :D http://www.irix7.com/techpubs/007-2179-003.pdf - SGI SX.25 Administration Guide

Cisco 2620 as PAD for a modem bank 5
So, like the other Dave, I've run into some unfortunate side effects of using a Cisco 26xx router. I'm running IOS c2600-ipvoice-mz 12.3(9) so thankfully I've got support for the x25 route (...)(...).. xot dns \2.\1.x25.org line in the config and my router is able to lookup other hosts. I did have to configure the access-list to allow all IPs, otherwise it was rejecting all XOT traffic incoming and outgoing. I have managed to set up a config where analog calls to WIC-2AM modems get presented a hidden menu that resembles the prompt you would get when connecting to TELENET/DATAPAC/TYMNET. This allows you to connect to a short list of up to 17 predefined hosts (18 menu entries max, including the exit command). Where I've hit a stumbling block is having a way to map incoming x25 calls to give remote access to my analog modems. It would appear that "interface Async<x>" doesn't support "encapsulation x25" on the c2620 which as I understand would be needed for it to work how I want. For now I guess I can use the cisco for outbound calls to a limited subset of TELEBAHN hosts. I'll have to figure out how to get inbound x25 calls routed to a modem bank hanging off another box eventually. I'm sure someone has a better idea for this, and I'll probably replace the hidden menu on the c2620 with routing through something running on a linux box eventually. -DK relevant lines for the dial-in menu: ! modemcap entry AUTOANSWER:MSC=S0=1:TPL=default modemcap entry NOANSWER:MSC=S0=0:TPL=default ! alias exec tpcbbs pad 78398001 ! menu tpcnet prompt '@' menu tpcnet command 783980 tpcbbs menu tpcnet command tpcbbs tpcbbs menu tpcnet command exit exit menu tpcnet default exit menu tpcnet line-mode menu tpcnet single-space ! banner motd ' TPCNET 783 235 0$(line)A ' ! line con 0 no motd-banner ! line 1 4 exec-timeout 0 0 x25 subaddress line vacant-message '' modem Dialin modem autoconfigure type AUTOANSWER autocommand menu tpcnet no activation-character length 0 transport output pad telnet autoselect timeout 1 autohangup stopbits 1 speed 115200 flowcontrol hardware !

Router list 6
Hi all, Other than a Cisco 2800 series router, is there a list of routers (software dependent of course) that would make good candidates for usage on telebahn? I have a line on some 1841's (free for pickup) and wanted to be sure these could be used before making the trip (not far, but also not close either with current fuel prices). Thanks Fred

dns updated, also hello new people! 2
hi everyone! i added Hans Hübner's record for network 230! i didn't add Mantas Mikul?nas's record for network 147 because it starts with a 1. pick a different number maybe? also sorry about not responding on the list to the earlier discussions, i'm currently moving house and it's taking up almost all my time. my net 752 will be offline for quite a while, months at least. i look forward to having a home lab again someday. for now, i'll be using the shadytel tdm lab (network 801), whenever i manage to have time to setup/unfuck its X.25 situation. :) [it's v6 only at the moment, which is awkward because cisco IOS XOT doesn't do v6 at all, hahaha...] -- ?strid smith (she/her) =<[ c y b e r ]>=

TELEBAHN still there 14
Hi, laforge kindly referred me to this list as we chatted about my interest in X.25. To get started, I have set up a virtual Cisco router using dynamips and configured it for xot according to the Telebahn notes document. I also added myself there. I tried connecting to the systems that are listed there, but none of them responded to X.25 connection requests. None of the gateway TCP ports (1998) in the list responded either. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but is any of you still interested in this? My longer-term plan is to get my VAX 4000-600 running VMS 5.5-2H4 and VAX P.S.I. connected to the network. Thanks, Hans

Added two virtual hosts 4
I'm still waiting for my hardware to arrive, but in the meantime, I have set up my virtual Cisco C7206VXR so that it routes some incoming X.25 calls to emulated systems that I've set up. Using Andrew Kay's xotpad, it is now possible to connect to one of those hosts from your local machine using XOT (but the pad command on Ciscos certainly works as well). $ xotpad -g x25.netmbx.org 23000101 _____ _____ _______ _____ ________ __ ___ ___ | __ \ / ____|__ __/ ____| / / ____| /_ |/ _ \ / _ \ | |__) | (___ | | | (___ / /| |__ | | | | | | | | | _ / \___ \ | | \___ \ / / | __| | | | | | | | | | | \ \ ____) | | | ____) / / | |____ | | |_| | |_| | |_| \_\_____/ |_| |_____/_/ |______| |_|\___(_)___/ Running on an emulated PDP-11/73 Please use PPN 2,1 to log in as guest! RSTS V10.0-L 18-Apr-23 05:40 AM User: I've tried connecting to the same host from Manta's router, but there seems to be some dramatic packet loss somewhere so it does not work well. Something to debug. Cheers, Hans

dns updated
Added these entries to DNS because they were new in the Google doc: 471 - Mantas Mikul?nas - x25.nullroute.lt 737 - Andrew Kay - xot.trysteropac.net I also added a note to send a message to this list, because I keep looking there and seeing new entries! I wonder how many people have bounced off because activation was not quick ... :\ Cheers! -- ?strid smith (she/her) =<[ c y b e r ]>= antique telephone collectors association member #4870

Any TELEBAHN nodes online at the moment? 6
Hi, I finally have my VAX and my Sun all wired and hooked up to Telebahn - They should be reachable at 230.002.00 and 230.003.00 respectively. I could connect from the outside using xotpad, but I have not yet been able to reach anything else through xot. Are any of your machines up at this point? Thanks, Hans

TELEBAHN Saturday 15
Hi Folks, Andrew (ajk) and myself have been thinking that it would be nice to have a recurring time where we bring our systems up and play around with some of the other X.25 nodes. Maybe some of you are interested in joining us? I would propose that we declare the last Saturday of a month to be "TELEBAHN Saturday" - My machines will be running all day, and Andrew said he'll run his around midday US Central time. I've set up my VAX so that you can create yourself an account and then use the SEND command to chat - Connect to 23000200 using xotpad or your node's native PAD and set yourself up for Saturday. Hope to meet some of you and some of your machines on Saturday! Hans
