[OT] What's Wrong with Apple?
"Even before President Trump’s tariffs threatened to upend Apple’s manufacturing business in China, the company’s struggle to make new products was leading some people inside its lavish Silicon Valley headquarters to wonder whether the company had somehow lost its magic." https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/11/technology/apple-issues-trump-tariffs.html?unlocked_article_code=1.-04.0iFw.L2iGEPJtB-OS&smid=url-share John R.

[OT] Is Apple stuck?
Apple's predicament in China, per the New York Times: "Apple has largely been the world’s most valuable company since 2011, and until Mr. Trump’s tariff threats, it was worth around 8 percent of the entire S&P 500 . . . moving [iPhone] production to the United States — the stated goal of Mr. Trump’s extreme tariff regime — is almost impossible for Apple. China is home to roughly 90 percent of Apple’s global production . . . a domestically built iPhone would cost more than triple its current price tag, which means a price of about $3,500. Worse, America simply lacks the manufacturing expertise, the competitive industrial clusters and even the population density required to make Apple products en masse . . . Apple is stuck, and there is no obvious way out." Wow. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/opinion/tariffs-china-iphone-apple.html?unlocked_article_code=1.-U4.w0Tm.LgEB_F0bua-w&smid=url-share John R.

Sheepshaver-WP 2.3.1 14
Has anyone else had this issue with ShSh-WP 2.3.1? John R. Begin forwarded message: > From: Bill Cheb <bcheb@...> > Subject: Sheepshaver-WP 2.3.1 > Date: September 5, 2024 at 1:54:22 AM PDT > To: johnrethorst@... > > Hi John, > > I've been a long time user of SheepShaver...almost since you brought it into being. I've used it often on my MacBook Pro running OSX 10.13.6, and I've come to rely heavily on it at times. > > Well, I very recently had to update to OSX 10.15.7, and of course, SS did not work. After spending about 3 hours reading (and taking a couple of headache tablets) how to update SS to work on my new OS. I downloaded Sheepshaver-WP_2.3.1, ran the installer script, which appeared to go well, but as luck would have it, the new SS install would not work either. I get the message, "Can't start SheepShaver". By now, I had to take even more headache tablets, but I still have enough sanity left to write this email and ask if you might have any suggestions on how I can get SS working again. Any assistance would be most gratefully appreciated. > > With regards, > Bill Cheb

Making the Windows to Mac leap 16
I realized recently that my Windows desktop is seven years old, and it's showing its age, so I've begun considering replacing it -- but with another Windows machine, or is now the time to switch to Macintosh? Word processing is one of the principal things I do on my computer, and I'm in a long-term relationship with WordPerfect -- I've been using it since 1987. What are the considerations I should be aware of in potentially migrating to the Mac? How well does the current WP for Windows run in the Mac environment? Or conversely, is there any significant functionality lost in switching to WP for Mac? Thanks for your help. Steve

[OT] U.S. Sues Apple, Accusing It of Maintaining an iPhone Monopoly — New York Times
Long long ago, IBM, "Big Blue", was considered Big Bad Blue by Mac visionaries at Apple. Then Microsoft became the bad guy. Guess whose turn it is now? https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/21/technology/apple-doj-lawsuit-antitrust.html?unlocked_article_code=1.eU0.l2rv.PsgspEHfSzrS&smid=url-share John R.

[ANN] Sheepshaver-WP 2.3.1 6
Sheepshaver-WP uses the Sheepshaver emulator to run legacy (OS9) Macintosh programs like WordPerfect on OSX / macOS. Requires macOS 10.6 or later. With this 2.3.1 update, Sheepshaver-WP now supports OS versions from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) through 14 (Sonoma), and is a 64-bit universal binary that runs natively on Silicon Macs as well as Intel. It also installs Gero Hermann’s fine Worpertinger file-conversion utility on machines running macOS version 10.11 (El Capitan) and later. Worpertinger also handles Spotlight and Quick Look for WordPerfect in version 10.11 and later. Separate filters by Gero for Spotlight and Quicklook are installed in machines running earlier OS versions. Because Apple deleted support for Postscript in macOS versions greater than 12 (Monterey), Sheepshaver-WP now handles printing and PDF creation for newer versions through the Ghostscript program, included with this distribution, which either makes a PDF on your desktop or prints your file. Printing is very fast and just as easy as ever. If you don’t have a Sheepshaver virtual disk, there’s a free one here at the WPMac group: Databases > Sheepshaver and Basilisk > John's Sheepshaver Disk 2.3. If you don’t have a Sheepshaver application (or want a new one for more recent OS versions), that’s free at https://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7360. Sheepshaver-WP is here at WPMac, in Databases > Sheepshaver and Basilisk > Sheepshaver-WP 2.3.1. Thanks to Smokey Ardisson, Edward Mendelson and Gero Hermann. Enjoy, John R.

Setting Unix folder in macOS 2
I got an email from a user with a question. Posting it here in case others have it too: > The shared/unix folder is my documents folder, not users > shared folder. I don’t see any way to change that. Set the shared (Unix) folder to anything you want in Sheepshaver Settings / Preferences, in Setup > Unix root. For past Sheepshaver versions there was caution against setting it to a large folder in macOS just because of the memory that would take. I don’t know if that’s still a concern; IAC I leave it set to Home > Documents. But I have an alias to my Music folder in the Documents folder, which works fine. John R.

Have you gotten an email asking you to verify your account? 12
If you get an email with a subject line something like "Action Required: Confirm Your 开云体育 Membership to Continue Receiving Group Emails", this is legit; groups.io has to verify some accounts in order to get the site removed from the Spamhaus blacklist. Your email may say something like: > You have two simple options to confirm your subscription: > > 1. Reply to this email indicating your wish to remain in your groups, or > 2. Log into your 开云体育 account and your active login will count as confirmation. I would follow a best practice of not replying to an unsolicited email, but choose #2 and log in to my account online. I would not click "开云体育" where it appears in blue in #2, but open a new browser page and go to groups.io myself. I try not to click on any links in any email. Apparently groups.io only needs to verify some accounts, so you may not get this email. John R.

End User 3
hello to all and I'm so elated 2 b among u! I've been a Mac user since system 6, in college. I learned on an LC and later bought a IIsi and upgraded it to OS 7.5.5 I couldn't afford a Mac notebook for my formal computer when I was in college, but looking back at their limitations, I'm glad I got win98 2nd edition. I have a MacBook running high sierra now. I toyed with wp 3.5 for Mac and even got a promotion VHS, which I treasured for years. I do know that Corel will never make a Mac version again because it will not b their $$$ maker. My question to u all, was wp 3.5 for Mac the 1st and only word processor that was graphic? I know there were dtp apps for this back in the day but I'm searching for word processing apps that would let u color the text and print color on a printer. It "looks" like 3.5 would alos handle color graphics. Is/was this true? I can't imagine any thing but pict/pic photos back then for that OS. Those of u that had it, please indulge me!

WordPerfect Mac - Digest #200
John and everyone, I absolutely want to remain in the group and mailing list -- even if I have mainly been lurking -- which is because WordPerfect, which I use every day, is pretty much humming along for me. WPMac in its own window on the macOS desktop
Possibly no one will want this, but it was amusing to put it together. Some experts at the emaculation.com forum put together a fairly reliable version of the BasiliskII emulator that can run a single application in a window on the macOS desktop, without displaying the classic Mac desktop, as in the WPMac setups that John and I (following John) have put together. So here is an app that runs WPMac in a window under System 7.6.1, with no desktop showing. It's a bit flaky. It's designed to shut itself down after you close WPMac (and prompts you to ask if you want it to do this), but sometimes takes its time asking, and sometimes won't shut down until you use Force Quit on the macOS system. So use with caution if you want it. Hold down the Option key when launching for a couple of options. https://mendelson.org/WPMac35e.zip When WPMac is the active window, the old System 7 menu bar appears in front of the current macOS menu bar, but it disappears when you click on something else in your system, and then comes back when you return to the WPMac app.

But why not? - it sounds like reporter Chris Kornelis shares that sentiment. From the context of her remarks, I infer she was talking about her first love as WP/DOS (which at that time looked very similar WP on Data General's RDOS): spare, fast, intuitively consistent and a writer's dream, because it presented the user with simply a blank screen, unencumbered by gewgaws like command menus. As the piece highlights her WP devotion, it would have been nice to note which WP she uses today (probably something a little more GUI, but maybe not). > > Thanks for the tip. > > > > > > I've been with wp since 5.1 for dos - I want to know with the mac version were all the graphics installed like in the dos/windows versions?

WPMacApp - update for Sonoma
Prompted by John R., I've been updating the WPMacApp so that all its printing/PDF features work under macOS Sonoma. Under Sonoma, the existing version should still be able to print directly to a PostScript-compatible printer (I haven't been able to test it with a non-PostScript-compatible printer, but I doubt it will work with one), but it can't create PDFs on the host macOS desktop, and it can't use the option to select a macOS printer. (All these features work, I think, under Ventura.) I now have these features working in Sonoma, I think, but want to test it further before going public. Meanwhile, I don't know whether anyone actually needs this update. I don't use the WPMacApp (I work in WPDOS), and only keep updating it for people who might need it. If no one actually needs an update, then there may be no point in spending any more time on it. If you think you wll need this, please send me a message, and please consider visiting this page: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/voluntary.html If your browser shows a 404 error message, that's because it changed http:// to https:// Please change it back in the address bar.

"I still write with WordPerfect." 2
<https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/07/arts/ann-patchett-tom-lake.html> Ann Patchett Isn’t Parting With WordPerfect The best-selling novelist refuses to yield when it comes to writing software, but she’s had a bit of a change of heart on Barnes & Noble. By Chris Kornelis Oct. 7, 2023, 5:00 a.m. ET Ann Patchett’s new book is called “Tom Lake” for some of the same reasons her previous novel was called “The Dutch House”: She thought it was clear, memorable and would sell well in bookstores like the one she owns in Nashville. It’s the kind of calculation that may have helped both books become best-sellers but that Patchett once considered a concession. “For just about anybody who has had a career as long as mine, you make friends with the reader. Whereas back in graduate school, there was disdain for the reader, because you were making such true art that the reader could never possibly understand you,” she said in a phone interview while on tour for “Tom Lake,” a novel about a mother unpacking a chapter of her life for her 20-something daughters. “It was like a built-in explanation for why you were failing.” Patchett’s other calculations include drinking her salad, swimming in someone else’s pool and retaining at least one graduate school habit. These are edited excerpts from the conversation. 1 WordPerfect I still write with WordPerfect. When I got my first computer during graduate school around 1986, we all used WordPerfect. I refuse to change. Anybody I know who used to use WordPerfect, when they find out that I use it, they’re like: Oh, my God, I wish I had never changed. [....]

WPMacApp - some fixes and new options
The WPMacApp has been annoying me with various problems in the AppleScript that runs in the background, and a few problems with the scripts in the OSA Menu (the little script icon near the far right of the menubar). I think I've fixed the script problems at long last, and have added two new options: 1. A "DOCX to Desktop" applet on the SheepShaver desktop. Drop a WP file on this applet, and, after a while, a DOCX equivalent will appear on your host desktop. This requires a relatively recent version of Microsoft Word to be installed on your host system. (I've set it run with Word 2016 or later.) It works this way. The applet copies the WP file to your host Documents folder; a script running in the background in the host macOS converts the file to an intermediate file in ODT (Open Document Text) format, using the libwpd filters that are also used by LibreOffice and by Gero Herrmann's QuickLook and SpotLight filters. These are the only Mac-based converters that can convert a WP file that has both footnotes and endnotes into an ODT file (or any other format) that retains the footnotes and endnotes. The file then opens automatically in Microsoft Word (which may prompt you for permissions) and gets saved from Word in DOCX format. The DOCX file appears on your desktop. 2. A "Convert to ODT in OS X/macOS" script in the OSA Menu that creates in your Documents folder the same ODT file described as above. If you have LibreOffice installed, you can open this file in LibreOffice and save as DOCX or anything else. If you have Word, you can Ctrl-click, choose Open With, and open it with Word. It can also be opened in TextEdit, but with minimal formatting and no footnotes or endnotes. Everything else as the same as in the previous version, except that some of the AppleScripts now (I hope) work correctly.

[ANN] Worpertinger 4.0 7
Gero Hermann has released the latest version of his elegant file-conversion utility, which now includes Spotlight and QuickLook filters, all updated to universal binary for both Intel and Apple Silicon computers. With this release, WordPerfect Mac will stay current with Mac hardware and OS versions for the foreseeable future. It’s hard to overestimate the value of this to all of us. Gero, thank you so much! The distribution, including complete documentation, is in the Files section here, as “Worpertinger_4.0.dmg”. Requires OS 10.11, El Capitan, or later. To install, first delete “WordPerfect.mdimporter” and “WordPerfect.qlgenerator” from either /Library/Spotlight and /Library/QuickLook, or ~/Library/Spotlight and ~/Library/QuickLook. Then place Worpertinger in your /Applications folder. John R.

WPMac App - another minor update
In the interest of wasting time when I ought to be preparing my tax return, I've slightly updated the WPMac App so that it now prompts you to shut down the app a few seconds after you exit WordPerfect. Same download page: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/mac-intel.html If you get a "not found" error, then your browser replaced http:// with https:// - remove the "s" and try again. The app is notarized, but you may at some point get the message that the app is damaged and needs to be moved to the trash. Instead, ctrl-click on it, choose Open and try again. If macOS tells you again that it's damaged, choose Open from the top of the menu that appears. If this keeps happening, then type this command into a terminal: xattr -rc followed by a space. Don't forget the space. Drag the app into the terminal and press Return. The app should now run. Except for the prompt to shut down the app, everything is the same, I think.
