FLDIGI not decoding

Excuse me if this is a duplicate post. I just downloaded FLDIGI last Sunday and have been trying to get it to work with my Yaesu FT-991A. After a lot of frustration, I've almost got it right. However, last night was the first time I was able to see properly decoded messages, but I was unable to transmit. After speaking to a fellow ham, he suggested I turn up the volume on my computer. This morning, I turned everything on, turned up my volume and I was able to transmit. BUT...now I can't get anything to decode at all. I am in BPSK31 mode. Something between shutting it down last night and turning it all on this morning a setting changed. Can anyone help me get this working? I am so close! Viki

There can be many reasons Fldigi does not ¡°print¡± with your setup.
?
One rookie error is to be in LSB data mode. ?All modes are USB-D now, even on 80 and 40m where lower sideband is for phone (voice).
PSK31 and CW will decode even if in lower sideband - but most modes will not.
?
?
Watch how much audio in getting to the sound card receive (Microphone level).
You don¡¯t want to ¡°starve¡± nor ¡°saturate¡± your sound card.
I presume you are using the built-in sound card in the rig.
?
Watch the sound level settings in the MENU of the rig.
That DIAMOND in bottom right of Fldigi waterfall should be GREEN, not yellow, red or black, when centered on a good signal.
?
We usually advise getting the receive audio at about -20dB if you use the Fldigi Rx monitor level.
?
ps - I do not own or use a Yaesu Ft991A but owners of that rig should advise what to look for.
?
If you see audio in the waterfall, and click on it, what happens if the mode is what is being sent?

Thanks for the reply, Barry!

I applied your recommendations and was able to see a perfectly decoded message this morning. I had been told that I MUST keep my mode in USB for everything, but I had better luck today switching it to DATA-U. I also turned up my mic so the green monitor was right around -20.
?
A friend and I tried to communicate back and forth last night and I could see him, but only half was decoded. He was unable to see my transmission at all. I don't know if it was on my end or his. I can only assume at this time that I'm doing it correctly. When I send my message, it starts typing in red in the top screen and the waterfall shows a bright yellow streak.
?
In the left screen where the frequencies pop up, I saw a CQ in red and clicked on it. It came through perfect. At the moment, there doesn't seem to be any activity.?Can I assume if I click on a signal in the waterfall, it should do the same as clicking in the list on the left of the screen and take me to that transmission?
?
Thanks for your help!

USB = upper sideband for voice/microphone input
DATA-U = upper sideband but using data input instead of microphone
