Wagon owners

Help
I have a 1947 Wagon. Between the roof braces on my wagon and the roof
there is a fiberboard like material about 1/4" thick. It looks like that
could be replaced with tar board concrete expansion strips where needed.
Is there support to be something like that between the body and the rear
wheel wells and the interior walls and the body walls? The inside of the
roof and the inside of the body walls have a rough black "finish". I
don't know if this is rust that has been treated with "rust converter"
or some old type of sound proofing. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Gerald,
I have a 49 Wagon that I'm restoring the body on. it has the same black
crappy finish as you described. I believe it was some type of protective
coating / sound deadener. Between the internal wheel wells and the body
appears to be a (once white now yellowed) caulk strip.
I plan on just covering up the old black finish with some sort of
undercoating (I haven't decided yet what type) and using RTV Silicone
between the body/fender.
Thanks for identifying the tar board. I haven't yanked the old ones out
yet.
Brad
