Spongy Brakes: PUN

PUN: Pavel up North

Aging has likely dulled my memory and I seem to recall that several years ago you had a humorous and sometimes biting exchange with Dr. Vern about the "spongy" brakes on your Willys Wagon.? Did that problem get resolved?

No, the problem persists in my opinion. ?About 4 years ago I took the Willys to a local shop (still run by an old guy) to have a "safety check" done. ?Now I should say at the outset here, safety and these Willys vehicles don't belong in the same sentence... still, the old fellow checked the vehicle over, tightened U-bolts, adjusted here and there but said the brakes were working normally! ?I pressed him about his analysis but he repeated that the sub-floor position of the master cylinder has its limitations. ?I didn't accept his comments but, it dawned on me that I might be expecting too much from the old girl... ?One change made was the removal of the "combination valve" in my various attempts to firm up the pedal. ?I should put it back as the removal made no difference.?
Drove "Bluebell" for a few days last summer and got our son to take the wheel. ?Judging by the expression on his face, he found the difference between his Nissan Leaf and an old Willys to be dramatic in city traffic.

Cheers and Merry Christmas! ?Pavel up north.

PUN, I had the same issue on my 53 pickup. I installed a dual reservoir master cylinder with the kit from Herm the Overdrive Guy and a self-adjusting drum brake kit on all 4 corners. The brakes are awesome. Nice firm pedal and all. Also, is BlueBell a 2wd or 4wd? If it¡¯s a 2wd with planar suspension, JeepsterMan has a front disc kit which includes new spindles the whole setup. Not sure if the dual res master cyl kit will fit on vehicles with the planar suspension as I plan on doing it with my 1950 jeepster. You might just need to add a proportioning valve on the front disc. Just another opinion.

?

Another check on spongy brakes could be the brake lines. Are they new? Old rubber lines could be expanding as they age.

Thanks for the comments Strud,

Yes, our wagon is 4WD model, with Herm's dual master cylinder and Chevy front discs (stock Willys drums at the back). ?All hard lines and flex hoses are "new". ?I installed a one way valve (was it 10 lbs?) in the rear circuit but didn't install one on the front because i read that the MC already had that valve built in. ?Perhaps that was wrong... ?I had a proportioning valve (Combination valve from a CJ) installed, but removed it.

Next summer, I'll attack the problem again.

All the best, Pavel up north.

ps: I'll start a thread on my crazy shenanigans while upgrading to a (true) 4 speed soon. ?now that was a bit of work!

I keep telling you, it's time to switch footwear away from these, at least when driving:

Good heavens... so, the really attractive sales lady said they were just to make me a little taller (sort of like Danny deVito). She was lying???

ps: Dr. Vern, are you getting drawn into the scintillating (and important) discussions on this list, again? ?Come on now, admit it, life has been a little boring since we last corresponded...hasn't it?

FYI, I understand that the Jeepsterman business and stock was sold to "JustJeepsters" located in Festus / Crystal City, MO.? Mark and son, John are the owners and are very good to deal with.? It is nice to have a Willys parts supplier close enough that I can drive to.

¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª-

Yes, my dearest Pavel, how true, how true.?

As a matter of fact, I was recently going to be in your fair city and thought it would be fun to knock on your door. But alas, my plans didn¡¯t work out. Your Customs agent looked in the trunk and made me get rid of the box of matches and paper bag full of dog %#!+.?

Regards,

Dr. Vern

My Good Dr.,? Everyone knows that acquaintances (online or otherwise) can be "full of it" but surely, it's disrespectful to your Willys to drive around with a trunk full.?

I seem to recall you took down your informative website some years back...do you have a new one in the works for WillysTech members to enjoy?

Cheers for the season!

Pavel up north.
