Curt,
I was hoping someone with actual expertise would? respond, but no.?? I don't know if? you're having trouble with? the? Carter now- my experience:
The Carter YF? looked right, but was numbered? for a 216 Chevrolet.? After I did a "rebuild", with a kit? from? Mike's carburetor, there was a problem? with? the idle/low speed jet basically not working (this could have been a problem? for years).? Mike told me there was a vacuum leak? somewhere; 859 tries later, could not find it.?? A small miracle happened- two Carters with the right numbers showed? up? on Ebay at the same time.? I'd been looking for years.? I steeled myself and offered $45 for each one, I think; won them both; there were enough parts between the two? to make one complete; put in another kit; no vacuum leak, hooray!? Proper idle, what a concept!? Moving parts around between the carburetors,? the vacuum leak moved around with the carburetor top. Can't see a problem with it, but the problem is fixed anyway.
I worked with Mike's carburetor to determine, or experiment, with a smaller main jet, to see if this could lean things up some.?? I did the bookshelf thing- went smaller until the engine starved for fuel-? and went back up in size one notch.? I don't remember, but I think the jet in one of the properly numbered carburetors is what's installed.?? In terms of the excess? fuel complaint, a friend who is a real mechanic explained that all? carbs from? these days cause the engine to run rich.? Also, if there is a leak in the rubber in the? accelerator pump assembly, thank you alcohol, a ton? of fuel can be pulled in.?
I don't recall anyone else on the list trying the Weber- if you do it, let us know how it goes.
