[WT] jeep mb "recessed" headlights

Chris Lange

Hi Alex,

MB's came with the recessed headlights in the grill so it is all probable that the previous owner, or one of the previous owners changed it over to a civi grill. One of the jeep dealerships in my area would make this change for a customer back in the early 50's according to one of my neighbors. He had a MB from the local Army Air corp base, but didn't like how dim the lights were. The dealership changed the lights and grill over for him. Both he, and I, wish he still had that old jeep. :)

Does your MB still have the data tags on the dash? Does it have the tool boxes built into the rear quarter panels? Lack of tail gate?

What other changes did they do to it?

Can you tell MB's are my favorite??? :)

hello,
i just found and bought a 44' jeep. runs great. but has a few quirks
i'm not too sure about. the most obvious is that the headlights are
not recessed. they look like cj lights. was this ever standard, or
could it be that it was modified sometime during its life?
i would like to change them to a recessed type but if it was standard
i'll leave it alone. thank you, alex

Chris and all,
thank you for your responses. How could anybody not keep these vehicles in the most pristine and original condition for 60 years? Unbelievable........
Back to reality, it does have the i.d. tags on the glove box door. Three of them to be exact. There are toolboxes in the rear panels, and one of them is lockable. And lastly, there is no tailgate. I guess that makes it a military model.
Once I get it home I'll be able to take a closer look at that grille and see what's cooking. Everything else seems "normal" and untouched ( still 6 volt) except for the inevitable deterioration of age. I am looking forward to restoring the jeep and I hope to count on all of you for your experience in the process. I'll try to post photos as soon as I can. Thank you again, Alex

hello chris,
thank you for your response. the more I survey the jeep, the more I am sure that it was a military jeep. over the next few days I will try to gently clean the paint on the hood and see if there are any numbers. the delivery plate reads 4/19/1945. the frame plate reads the same serial # as the dash plate.
I noticed that some of the photos I have seen on the net that there is a smaller fourth plate closer to the center line of the jeep. Would you happen to know what information it contained? thank you again, I'll keep you posted if you like.

Hi Alex!
Not sure about that fourth plate, but I'm sure someone on here may. It might be the body tub tag? I'm not sure. Take your time on sanding the hood. Very gently, and wet sand it if you can. I was able to find the hood numbers for my 55 M38A1 this way. And I have found out that my 51 M38 was a "NG" or National Guard jeep, as it had the lettering under about 5 other colors on the rear bumperette. Sounds like you definitely have a war jeep! Congrats!! I am allready very jealous!

Yes, please keep me posted! If you have any pics of this new jeep of yours, please send them along to Bullseye@... my home e-mail address.

Good luck!

Chris

The 4th plate is a shipping plate. This plate contains data to facilitate loading and unloading during transport.A nifty research resource can be found here..........

Enjoy.
