cj2 tires/overhaul/introduction
Ed Dyvig
Hi everyone. Couple of questions: I have 6.00x16 snow tires on stock rims on
my 47 CJ2A. If I bought some NDT tires what would be the best size for my Jeep? I was thinking about 6.50 or 7.00 unless clearance problems would arise. Also, my L134 engine runs/sounds good and has respectable power but smokes/burns oil. I figure it needs at least rings and valve job. Can the L134 flathead be overhauled while in Jeep or is it better/easier to pull engine? Also, rough estimate of cost of rings/valve job? My oil spills usually result from forgetting to pull drain pan out from under vehicle which sometimes results in smashed pan and USED oil spilled all over. So far the EPA hasn't discovered me (hope they're not monitoring list). BTW, I don't think I ever properly introduced myself. I am a corn/soybean farmer near Humboldt, Iowa. I had a couple Willys CJ's as a "kid" and just recently got the bug again. I found a nice 47 CJ2A that had been a trencher vehicle (trencher long gone). It only has 19K actual miles but of course many more hours at work. I sold the pto and belt pulley to pay for brakes/water pump/fuel pump. I've had lots of fun w/it. Shortly after I bought it I discovered and bought a 67 CJ5 with V6 w/67K miles and excellent body. I need to finish painting it (owner had started but gave up). It's in very good shape and I was planning on selling the 2A when I finish the 5. But I've been having so much fun in the woods with the Willys that I don't know what I'll do now. I'm concerned the CJ5 with 3.73 gears and only 3 speed will not crawl slow enough for off road. Well I'd better quit rambling. Thanks. Oh, one tip I learned the hard way, always borrow the wife's cell phone when taking the Willys for a drive. Ed Dyvig Humboldt, Iowa |

i had three jeeps going at the same time. A45 GPW,46 cj and 48CJ. On the 45 i kept it orignal with the 600x16 NDT. They worked great in the mud and dirt. But on the hard WET pave ment, they could be a little trickey, especially on cornerig at 40 or 50 miles per hr. Thats another story.On my 46 i use 700x16 tires tires, that is strictly for plowing. I keep a set of chains with it. Had to use the chains once, in three years., on the rear wheels only, the weight of the plow on the front takes care that area.On my 48 i have original 600x16 NDT, This vehicle is now in the process of being redone, from the floor up. Awaiting delivery of new body(repro.).On the motors , i had them rebuilt by a professional shop that deals in that business. I took the motors out, (45GPW and 48 cj) took them to the shop and they did the job. I went and got the parts from a surplus dealer, and the shop put them in . They had the books to work off of.Between the two motors being rebuilt and me getting the parts ,the hold job cost about $1000.00 and that is New York prices. Excellent work done.I did not have the patience ,time or tools,or the no how to do the job. Bob |

The valves on my 46 were done last year by a friend of my sons.They were easy to do with the engine still in.As usual i was the go-for. He checked the rings and pistons and they alright for now , but in the future, they will have to be done. This same friend is the same guy that help to put my other two engines back in the other jeeps, after they were rebuilt. Between the three of us , my son,his friend and myself, and the books that i have ,everything turned beautiful. Those three four bangers run as smooth as can be. Bob |

I was considering trying a rebuild myself on my '48 2A, but with our first child on the way I don't think I'm going to have as much time for "playing Jeep" (as my wife puts it) as I used to. And if you got 2 motors rebuilt for $1000 it might just be within my price range ;^) Thanks in advance, Cris '48 CJ2A Rye, NY |

I would stick with the 6.00X16 NDT for two reasons. Clearance and power. That is the size the little four banger was designed to turn. Bigger is just hard on clutches, transmissions, x-fer, you name it. I happen to have 7.00X16 on my GPW at the present and it really doesn't like them. I am geared a little higher than you, but I still think the 6.00 is a more suitable size. If you do decide to sell the little Willys, give this Iowegian a chance. Ron, Ia 43GPW, 51M38 Ed Dyvig wrote:

Ron;
What are you doing running the 7.00x16s on the GPW. I was almost positive the M-38 ran those, from stock? Reed (CA) --- "Ronald L. Cook" <rlcook@...> wrote: From: "Ronald L.
