Tierra Bella Volunteer Opportunity

Hi,

Saturday, April 13, 2024. Start times depend on role.
Tierra Bella Bicycle Tour
Amateur Radio Volunteer Sign-up Link:?

As we know, festivals and events are returning in full force everywhere. The Tierra Bella Bicycle Tour is fully back and will bring around 1,500 cyclists to South County, through Morgan Hill and Gilroy, from Willow Springs Rd to Gilroy Hot Springs. There are 4 routes available of 30,50,74, and 101 miles. In order to squeeze that much biking into the area, they will be utilizing a lot of back roads and spaces with no cellular coverage. So you know that means... Amateur radio to the rescue!?

While the radio team organizing the support of the event is from San Jose, this event is in our backyard. It's our "turf" and it would great if GVARC showed up to represent.?
To sign up for the available positions head to this web page at the Santa Clara County ARES/RACES website:?
You will need to have an account which only takes a few moments to apply for if you do not have one already. Then pick the role you are interested in.

Tierra Bella event website: Tierra Bella Website:?

Hope to see you all at one of the briefings.?

Cheers,

Ray

Re: Trouble Importing GVARC Channel List

Hi,

I have the updated channel list but have been busy with July 4 activities the past couple of weeks with planning, prep, and day-of operations. I will try to get to that this evening or tomorrow with an updated list that should address several issues.?

So please hold off until a new comm comes out from the club to proceed with the new list.?

Cheers,?
Ray

Hello Alvin,?
I don't know about GVARC's list, but I have an idea for the short term.?
Go to the SBCARA website and look at our list:?

I think you will need to talk to Pat Moore about the CSV file on their website. I have CCed?him on this email.?

Nevermind. It was a tab-delimited file but each time was enclosed with quotes, causing Excel and most programs to treat it as one long string. Essentially, there were no delimiters. I fixed the file with Python. It's attached to this response. Hopefully, you can read it now.

Sea Otter Classic 2022 - Amateur Radio Volunteers - April 6-10, 2022

To Past SOC Volunteers, SBCARA Members, other interested volunteers and neighboring Ham Radio groups

The 2022 Lifetime Sea Otter Classic will be held on April 7-10, 2022.? Help from amateur radio operators has been a vital resource for communication in the Fort Ord National Monument backcountry and the Gran Fondo ("Great Endurance") Carmel Valley Route.? Thank you to those of you who have volunteered in the past.

The Lifetime Sea Otter Classic attracts thousands of athletes and spectators and is now regarded as the world’s premiere cycling festival.? The areas where we assist have little or no cellular or repeater coverage.? It is an excellent opportunity for demonstration and practice of emergency communications and help build readiness for a real disaster.

This year help will be needed for the following times:

Thursday 4/7 - Enduro Support - Morning through mid afternoon

Saturday 4/9 - Gran Fondo Carmelo (Carmel Valley Route) Support - Very Early Morning to Early Evening

Saturday 4/9 - Back Country Support -? MTB Fuego 100K Saturday Backcountry Radio - Very Early Morning to Early Evening

Sunday 4/10 - Back Country Support? - MTB Fuego Sunday 40K, Robles Tour & Gravilla Gravel Race -? Very Early Morning to Early Evening

Camping is available directly from the event (?- subject to availability and sells out quickly - some campgrounds are already sold out) or we have the option of camping for no charge in the Laguna Seca paddock.

Ham radio operators will be primarily working radios including ham radios and/or commercial/public safety radios ?(i.e. You may be asked to coordinate on a public safety frequency to guide in an ambulance while the medic provides care).? We'll always try to pair experienced hams with new hams as needed. First aid and course marshal support will be provided by National Ski Patrol as in the past.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you're interested in volunteering.? We'll need a volunteer waiver signed and we will have more details available soon.

Volunteers receive a volunteer T-Shirt, a pass to the Sea Otter Classic Festival (a $70 value), and a lunch.

Please note that the times and details are subject to change, but we will keep you updated if you volunteer.? Please keep in mind that end times are estimates.? In most cases the event will end earlier, but if we have a significant incident, demobilization may go much later and especially in the backcountry, exit routes are closed to vehicle traffic during the event.? Updates will be available at (It is still early and this page is still being updated for this year - 2021's information is here for reference).

To sign up please go to this link ?or if this doesn't work for you, feel free to just reply to takeuchi@... via e-mail.

Also, please go to??and in the password field, enter the word “Radio” (without quotes) do not enter anything else on the page and click on “Submit”. The page will update with the Amateur Radio shifts. Click on the check box to click on if you’re available and interested in that volunteer activity. All the events are for the backcountry at Fort Ord except for the one called “Gran Fondo Carmelo - Radio support, SBCARA” for the Carmel Valley Road Event. For “Group – Organization Name” please select “San Benito Amateur Radio Association”. You can fill out your information. Under “Is anyone volunteering with you” please enter “None”. We need a separate submission for each volunteer. Sign the disclaimer by clicking the check box and entering your name and submit. You’ll receive an email from Jeff Lindenthal to confirm your registration.? This process needs to be done for each volunteer.

Like many ham radio groups, we’re migrating to for our email system. If you’re volunteering this year, please go to and sign up for our email system so you can get updates. The nice thing about this is that this year, you can see emails, even those before your sign up, and don’t have to store them on your own email system. I send out the information about on-line volunteer registration as soon as it is available.? I can also sign you up for updates, but you must confirm your email in order to receive updates.

Please pass this email along to anyone you think might be interested.? We're going to have challenges since some of our regular volunteers aren't available this year due to the change of date this year.

FYI - The Big Sir International Marathon (BSIM) is looking for volunteers two weeks later (April 24th) - If you're interested, please let me know and I can forward you information about this event.

Thanks & 73,
- Timothy S. Takeuchi -?
