Any interest in adding support for other DV modes? 8
We are indeed fortunate to have a digital voice repeater up on the South Peak of Mt Diablo. Our current repeater was set up in 2012 and consists of ICOM radios, an ICOM controller and an intel PC running ICOM gateway software. The DV/digital voice segment of our hobby has been hard at work creating multi-mode hardware and software. The best software is open source and free. The most popular is written by Jonathan Naylor, G4KLX. He actually came out to the Bay Area for Pacificon 2018 and made a couple of presentations about multi-mode. I would like feedback on whether there is interest in upgrading our equipment to support not only D-STAR, but Yaesu Fusion and P25. The solution could also support DMR, but given that the K6MDD DMR repeater is on North Peak, DMR would not be necessary for W6CX. Basically, the current D-Star equipment and software on South Peak would be replaced with multi-.mode equipment. The objective would be two-fold -- better utilize the frequency pair used by the current W6CX-DStar repeater by getting more users to use it, and provide a high-quality capability on Mt Diablo that supports a variety of DV modes, possibly encouraging more hams to give DV a try. Any decision to move forward would be made by the club, with focus on the Technical Committee. But before I make any proposal to them, I am interested in member and user input. I am aware I'm posting on a D-Star group. If you know people who have Fusion or P25 radios who might be interested in this issue, please either have them contact me directly and I will post their thoughts here, or perhaps have them join this groups.io list. Thanks! Jim - K6JM jim@... W6CX D-STAR Gateway Admin PS: The Los Angeles basin has a multi-mode DV repeater -- K6PUW on Oat Mountain. It currently handles D-STAR, DMR, P25 and Fusion. It has been quite successful.

DMR Hotspot Frequencies 2
Jim, et. al, You say questions about DMR and other protocols are welcome here; so I have one. I heard at Pacificon that some people setting up their own DMR hotspots are putting them on a frequency that interferes with other operations. So what are some frequencies hotspots can be tuned to and still play nice in the sandbox? Mike N6JGA

W6CX's DStar Repeater - New Router! 2
A lot has been happening behind the scenes up on the South Peak of Mt Diablo, where MDARC's analog and DStar repeaters are located. For years, we've had internet connectivity up there, used for IRLP and Echolink by the analog repeater, and by the DStar Gateway for linking to reflectors, to provide our DStar Dashboard and to have a page to register your callsign for DStar. But we were experiencing internet outages due to bad guys attacking our router, so the Tech Committee did a project to install a new hardened system with a new router that is able to withstand these attacks better. Since installation, our up time has been 100%, so thanks to the Tech Committee for fixing this problem.

Icom 5100A
Hi everyone, I recently had an Icom 5100A unit stolen here in the Bay area from my Jeep. If you see some non HAM selling one or one for sale locally please advise. N6CAL Lee

Linking to 3 types of reflectors
For those new to DStar on W6CX, it's useful to know that the W6CX DStar repeater is running special software on its Gateway computer. This software allows users to issue link commands not only to traditional DPlus reflectors with names starting with REF (example is our normally-linked reflector REF014C), but also to DExtra reflectors (names starting with XRF) and DCS reflectors. This is possible because most of the time, the gateway runs the Open Source software written by G4KLX. If you are new to DStar, of course you want to get going as quickly as possible and just have QSOs. At some point, you may want to learn how to have your radio send out unlinking and link commands. We encourage our users to do this whenever the repeater is not busy. You can read more about linking at http://www.mdarc.org/activities/repeaters/dstar/linking I encourage people with a new DStar radio to first get used to its DR mode. Be sure to check if the W6CX DStar repeater's info in the radio's pre-loaded tables has the correct frequencies (). Once that is ok, DR mode makes it really easy to have QSOs and to issue unlink and link commands. Because we have access to REF, XRF and DCS reflectors, we can reach many, many people around the world. I still remember my first QSO over DStar with a foreign ham -- I got the W6CX DStar repeater to link to a reflector with mostly UK hams. I called out about midnight here and a taxi driver in London came right back. Now, I've had many DX QSOs on HF over the years, but this QSO had no static or noise, like the ham was next door. I like REF030C, based in Atlanta, because there are a lot of interesting people there. But there are so many other reflectors out there. Feel free to find them and link our repeater to them. When done, please link back to our default -- REF014C. This is based in Las Vegas and has various west coast repeaters linked to it. If your relink fails, hopefully someone else will fix it during the day, otherwise it will be reset to REF014C during the night. The repeater is here for all to enjoy -- have fun with it! And if you have questions or issues, feel free to post questions here. Jim - K6JM W6CX DStar Gateway Admin

Welcome to the w6cx-dstar "groups.io" discussion group
Welcome! Please feel free to post questions and answers not just about DStar and the W6CX DStar repeater, but related questions about digital voice over radio. Many of us use not only DStar, but DMR, Fusion and other digital voice modes. This group is a continuation of the previous Yahoo Group called w6cx_dstar. With Verizon's decision to scale back Yahoo Groups to a simple messaging system and to delete all archived messages and files, it was time to move to groups.io. The creator of groups.io is the original author of what became Yahoo Groups. groups.io is similar, but has more features and is quite a bit more reliable. Jim - K6JM W6CX DStar Gateway Admin
