Off Center Fed Dipole Antennas Explained and How Rick (DJ0IP) Helped Me Build Mine

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

For those interested, below are links to two rather long (2-hours each) YouTube videos that were done by for the UK Denby Dale Amateur Radio Club in May and June respectively last year.? Rick is the guy who designed (over 5 years of hard work) the two Aerial-51 Off Center Fed Dipole (OCFD) Antennas I highly recommend that SpiderBeam currently markets through VibroPlex.? IMHO they are absolutely the most effective and best performing OCFD Antennas available from the commercial market.? The longest, at roughly 135 feet long, is the with no tuner needed on 80/40/20/17/15/10 Meters.? The other OCFD Antenna that Rick designed and SpiderBeam markets is the 67 foot long with no tuner needed on 40, 20, 15, 10 and 6M with SWR below 2.5:1 on all of those Bands.

?

In 2021 I exchanged a dozen or so emails with Rick as he walked me through the process of building my homebrew, lighter-weight version of the that we have used so successfully during the ARC of Parker County Field Day type events.? I skipped building the 80M RMU and use the Tuner on my radio to work 80M.? We use this antenna with two 100W radios simultaneously operating SSB on two different Bands (40M, 20M, 15M or 10M).? We use a Low Band Systems QuadPlexer coupled to individual Low Band Systems Band Pass Filters to accomplish this capability.

?

In the videos below, Rick explains why the Aerial-51 807HD and the Aerial-51 404UL Antennas perform so well.? Rick focuses on the hybrid 4:1 transformer Balun and the 1:1 Common Mode Choke he designed that, when combined, enables these antennas to perform without a tuner on so many Bands and curtails the Common Mode Current that is so typical with OCFD type antennas.? In Part 2, Rick describes in detail how you can build the hybrid Balun and the antennas.

Subject: [w5sh] FYI - Armed Forces Day Crossband Test - Saturday May 11, 2024

This Armed Forces Day Cross Band Test event notice is very early considering
it will occur in May. However, the event was mentioned during last
Wednesday's Texas RACES Zoom Meeting so I am echoing their event notice to
those that may be interested in putting it on their calendar now. Thanks
again go to Tom Hyde (NK5H) from the Hood County ARC for sending me the
notice of this event last year which was the first time I worked this event.
I successfully contacted 7 of the 20 Military Stations that supported this
event last year. Last year I sent this information out two days before the
event and some responded that they would have preferred an earlier notice to
give them more time to prepare for it. I plan to re-send this information
five days prior to the event this year.

Here is the link to the Armed Forces Day Cross Band Test information
regarding the event that is scheduled for Saturday 5/11/24 -

Attached is the Armed Forces Day Crossband Test Event DOD/MARS Notice that I
edited to add some clarifying information to make it a little easier to
schedule and participate in this event. I updated the document I provided
last year to show the times and frequencies for this year's event. Compared
to 2023, some times and frequencies changed, some stations are not
participating this year and some stations were added for 2024. The update
details I provided were somewhat tedious, so if you have previously worked
this event successfully and find anything I added to the Notice that needs
correcting, please let me know ASAP so I can take care of that and
re-distribute the information.

This is called a CROSSBAND event because the Military Stations will be
transmitting on MARS Military frequencies and will announce what Ham
frequency they are monitoring. The Ham objective is to set up your HF radio
to Receive on the MARS frequency and listen for the announcement telling you
what Ham frequency that Station is monitoring. Then transmit on that Ham
frequency to make a contact with that station to get on their Log Book.
This event does offer QSL Cards for Hams that make contacts with the
Military Stations during this event.

If you do not know how to operate "Split", here is a link to a short
4-Minute YouTube video that explains how to configure an HF radio for Split
Mode. In this case he explains specifically how to configure the ICOM
IC-7300 for Split operations. However, most HF radios use virtually the
same steps but obviously with different buttons to push. I advise ignoring
the "slightly off-frequency" trick he suggests for breaking pileups. -

<> &t=242s

Let me know if you have any questions.

If you have a Yaesu FT-991A, below my signature are the "Split" instructions
that Jason (N5TXL) provided last year for that radio.

Bob - KG5SQJ
