NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service to join the SKYWARN??program. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches and nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are encouraged to become a spotter. As a amateur radio operator we play a special role in providing real time communications. Training is free and typically lasts about 2 hours.

You'll learn:
  • Basics of thunderstorm development
  • Fundamentals of storm structure
  • Identifying potential severe weather features
  • Information to report
  • How to report information
  • Basic severe weather safety
Please register directly with the NWS as BSFARC is only hosting/promoting the class as a public service to our community.
Winlink, or formally,?Winlink Global Radio Email(registered US Service Mark), also known as the?Winlink 2000 Network, is a worldwide radio messaging system that uses amateur-band??and government frequencies to provide radio interconnection services that include?, position reporting,?, emergency and relief communications, and message relay. The system is built and administered by volunteers and is financially supported by the Amateur Radio Safety Foundation.

Let us know at the January meeting if you are interested in a hands-on Winlink class.

Meeting Minutes

If you did NOT receive the meeting minutes for the last meeting you may have been dropped from the club roster. Our member only portal password has also been changed. Contact Kelly KI4JAV (KI4JAV at?) to check on your membership status. Our dues are still only $10.00 per year for the first person in your household!?
We are searching for a volunteer for the Morgan County ARES EC position. Must be at least a technician level and have an interest in emergency communications. We can help with the training!
The club is also looking for another Extra Class license holder to join our VE team to help us administer licensing exams through the ARRL program.

State QSO Parties

A State QSO Party is a contest where you try to work as many stations as possible in a specific state or group of states. Because multipliers are usually counties of that state, you also try to work as many counties as you can. Typically, State QSO Parties are a little more laid back in intensity so they can be a?
fun activity for newer contesters. Each state has a 'party host' site where you can submit your logs if you want to compete or just do it for fun!
While the state QSO parties are over for 2024 you can start planning for the ones next year!

February - 2025

First Weekend:
Vermont QSO Party?
Minnesota QSO Party?
British Columbia QSO Party

Last Weekend:
South Carolina QSO Party
North Carolina QSO Party

Club Apparel

The club has ordered some extra t-shirts and currently has 7 medium, 3 large and 8 XXL shirts available. Let Kelly KI4JAV know if you want and she will bring them to the next meeting. They are only $7.00 each thanks to Rugby Screen Printers as we are able to purchase at a discounted rate. Show your support for BSFARC and Rugby Screen Printers by ordering yours today!
Winter Field Day is held the last full weekend in January. For 2025, it will be held on January 25th and 26th. The 30-hour operational period starts at 1600 UTC on Saturday (11 am EST), the 25th, and ends at 21:59 UTC on Sunday, the 26th?(4:59 pm EST). Stations may begin setting up no earlier than 1600 UTC (11 am EST) on the Friday before. However, cumulative set-up time shall not exceed 12 hours.?

The designated Winter Field Day exchange includes your call sign, a category number, a class identifier, and a location identifier. The category is a number designated by the number of transceivers (stations) at your location that are capable of transmitting simultaneously. 1, 2, 3, etc. This means you have the people needed to operate the number of transmitters you choose. Include all HF, VHF, and UHF transceivers. Don¡¯t count a station if it must be left unattended while you make contacts on another. If you decide to operate a satellite station, the satellite station does not increase your category number.

H - Home station:?is defined as any station participating from inside their permanent livable residence.

I - Indoor station:?is defined as any station operating away from Home but from inside an insulated, weather-protected building or structure on a permanent foundation. Indoor stations typically have plumbing, heating/cooling, and running water. Church, EOCs, a club shack, a cabin, and community centers are all examples of an Indoor station.

O - Outdoor station:?Outdoor stations operate from a partly or fully exposed building or shelter that does not typically have plumbing, heating/cooling, or running water available. Operating from a picnic table, park pavilion, tents, or under pop-up canopies are all places that could be considered Outdoor. These are locations where you may have to provide your own heat source and/or protection from the elements.?

M - Mobile / Mobile Stationary:?These stations are defined as operations from a mobile or potentially mobile structure like an RV, car, van, sailboat, cargo trailer, mobile EOC, ETC. These are operating positions that may offer some sort of built-in heating/cooling. Mobile Stations do not have to be mobile during the event. They are defined as having the ability to be mobile should it be necessary to move during the event. RVs and Cargo trailers with external antennas set up are still considered Mobile.?

For example, if you are operating by yourself using one transmitter from an RV in Tennessee, your exchange would be 1M Tennessee. If you were operating for a house it would be 1H Tennessee.

Partial Results
The weather was warm and the 10-meter band was HOT! We had about 10-11 club members show up for our on-site station under the club call sign of W4BSF. Approximately 9 logs will be submitted with W4BSF having 104 contacts in the log for about 11,856 points. What did everyone learn other than we need to brush up on our Spanish?

It was late in the day, but the 5-element 10-Meter Yagi was first checked for SWR (1:1) and then put on the air. Truly a team effort.
We had lots of help as everyone did something to make this possible. Stephen KI4NG up on top of things as usual.
The 100' tower was not quite ready for the contest, but we are already looking forward to seeing what will be gracing the skys next year.

President's Corner

For those who do not know me. Hi, my name is Kelly KI4JAV. I received my?technician ticket back in March 2005. I took my test with the club at the local armory. What sold me on becoming a ham? It was NASA! I have a love of space and found out that most astronauts are ham radio operators. I might never get to go to space, but my voice can be heard there! I was mainly active on the local 2m repeater, 70cm repeater, and simplex. In 2012 life happened and I was no longer active in the hobby.

In 2019 I was looking to get back into the hobby. Just so happens around the same time, I¡¯d received email inviting me to a club meeting. Unfortunately, I¡¯d seen the email a week later and missed the meeting. I thought maybe I should email back and let them know I got the email, but it was on an old account that I just happened to check. I then received an invitation to winter field day at East Rim Overlook in Big South Fork. It wasn¡¯t far from home; I thought why not. Showing up to a place with nothing but strangers is not something I normally do. But I¡¯m sure glad I did! The rest is history! (something else I love)

I¡¯d like to thank you all for electing me your club president. My personal goal for the club in 2025 is growth! Grow in numbers, grow in activeness, and grow in the hobby. I think with the Be Radio-Active 2025 Challenge we together can achieve this! Looking forward to all our adventures together in 2025!
Be innovative! Be influential! Be inspiring!

Avery Honeycutt KQ4PCE

By
HUNTSVILLE?| Avery L. Honeycutt has been nominated for the position of Scott County Veterans Services Officer, County Mayor Jerried Jeffers informed County Commission Monday evening.

While the appointment is subject to approval from County Commission when it meets on Dec. 16, Jeffers said that Honeycutt was the only candidate who formally applied for the job ¡ª and that turned out to be quite okay.
¡°After talking amongst ourselves, (the interview committee) didn¡¯t see any reason to post the job again or anything like that,¡± Jeffers said. ¡°We¡¯re completely satisfied with Avery ¡ I¡¯m tickled that he wound up taking the position.¡±?

Honeycutt, who will replace retiring Veterans Services Officer Ron Keeton, is retired from the U.S. Army, where he spent more than 20 years in service. He is a past commander of American Legion Post 136 in Oneida, and most recently worked in the office of Scott County Clerk.?

Lucas Lackey KQ4UAN

Congratulations to Lucas Lackey who is not only a club member holding a technician license but also a Computer Information Technology student who has successfully passed his PC Pro Certification, verifying that he has the skills necessary to work as IT support professional.
Let us know if you are ready for the exam at?W4BSF@...G?as we can schedule a session just for you!

The VE (Volunteer Examiner) team has made the transition to electronic submission for testing documents. While we still only do in-person testing the applicant can choose to take a paper exam or complete their test using a computer. Forms are emailed to the applicant, ARRL and to the FCC for faster processing. The ARRL testing fee is still $15 for adults and under the age of 18 it is only $5. The $35 license fee is paid directly to the FCC and with the ARRL youth program they will reimburse the youths that fee! We will work with you to schedule an exam in your area at a convenient time. No more waiting, long drives or trying to take an on-line test with multiple cameras. We try to make it as easy as possible to take but it's up to you to pass!

KQZIP Jamie Christian

A BIG shout out to Jamie Christian KQ4ZIP on passing his general class exam on Thursday December 5th. Jamie obtained his technician class license in May of 2024 as has worked some on 10-meters but is looking for the having access to 95% of the bands now!

Ken Pasternack

(Call Pending)

Ken had only been studying for a little while and was getting passing scores on his practice tests. He tested and PASSED his technician exam on December 18th and is waiting for his call sign to be issued now. He is looking forward to hitting the PTT button and joining us on one of our NETS. He also earned 150 points for the Radio Active Challenge.

It has been suggested that we work on our plans for 2025. There are various areas that we should focus on and look forward to getting input from everyone.

New Ham Development and Training:?Develop an effective, coordinated program of public relations, recruiting, training and ongoing assistance targeted to prospective and newly licensed hams in our community.

Public Relations:?Establish an effective Amateur Radio presence in our community, including contact with local media and coverage of your activities; Public Information Officer appointment.

Emergency Communications:?Club members should become skilled in communicating effectively during communications emergencies and be prepared to assist when needed; Official Emergency Station appointment and participation in ARES.

Technical Advancement:?Continuing education in the technical aspects of Amateur Radio to ensure that our club members are technically competent, familiar and comfortable with modern radio-electronics technology; Technical Specialist appointment.

Operating Activities:?Active participation as a club in one or more major operating or operating support activities to ensure that our club maintains a high level of operating skill.

While many New Year resolutions are quickly forgotten we hope you join us in `making 2025 a year to enhance your skills and knowledge as an amateur radio operator.

A certificate will be awarded to the person with the most points. Other categories include The Ambassador for whoever has the most points in that section. A certificate will also be awarded to the person with the most educational points.

The ¡®Sprint¡¯ certificate is awarded to the person who reaches 1000 points first! Keep track of your points on the honor system. Repeater contacts and contacts using Echolink or similar means do not qualify. Start tracking points now and the certificates will be presented at our December 2025 meeting.

Straight Key Night is held every January 1 from 0000 UTC through 2359 UTC.
This 24-hour event is not a contest; rather it is a day dedicated to celebrating our CW heritage. Participants are encouraged to get on the air and simply make enjoyable, conversational CW QSOs. The use of straight keys or bugs to send CW is preferred. There are no points scored and all who participate are winners.

Santa NET 3.916

The Holidays are here, and Santa is firing up his ham radio! Santa Net is back on 3.916 MHz for the 19th year! Starting Friday, November 29th, good girls and boys can talk to Santa Claus, via amateur radio, nightly starting at 7:00 PM (Central). The Santa Net will run every night through Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024.

Pete Thomson (KE5GGY), of The 3916 Nets, commented on The Santa Net. He said, "Santa Net and Christmastime is our favorite time of the year on 3916. The band is quiet, and we love connecting kids to Santa at the North Pole!¡±

Youngsters can talk to "Santa at The North Pole" via strategically placed operators (Santa Net Relay Stations) who relay the voice of Santa. Thomson credited the dedication of 3916 net members as the reason for the net¡¯s growth and longevity. He said, "What started with several children talking to Santa on 3916 back in 2005 has truly blossomed into an amazing group effort. Santa Net is only possible because of the net members who volunteer their time and talents as relay stations and in other support roles."

In addition to connecting kids with Santa, Thomson said that Santa Net also brings young people into amateur radio. He added, ¡°Santa Net is often the first time many of these kids experience the magic of amateur radio. Every year we hear from parents and sometimes even the kids who go onto get their amateur license after taking part in Santa Net.¡±

Prior to each night's Santa Net, pre-net check-ins can be made at?/ Third party rules and regulations apply.

The Santa Net is presented by The 3916 Nets. The Rag Chew Crew, The Tailgaters, 3916 Trivia and The Freewheelers are all amateur radio nets that meet on 3.916 MHz nightly. For more information on The 3916 Nets, go to??For more information on The Santa Net go to??or email KE5GGY at Gmail dot com.

MERCURY IIIS Linear Amplifier

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

If you have been considering power amplifier for your HF station, the 1200 watt Mercury IIIs is about the best bang for your buck. ?It is expensive¡ª$2799¡ªbut most are much higher. ?The price increases at the beginning of the year to 3094. ?Sign up now for the best price. It gets great reviews; my buddy in East Tennessee has one and loves it.

The only downside is that you have to wait a long time for one unless you can find a rare used on for sale. ?The manufacture rate is very low, and you have to get in line and wait up to a year to get one.

Sign up here:?

When they get to your position in line, they will ask for a $1200 deposit, but you can change you mind at that point. ?If you accept, you pay the remainder before shipment.
