Walthers ACM

I have a Walthers Advanced Control Module (an Allen article) for the turn table. I can't make it work. Walthers can't either. The replacement ACM is the same.
I have a Digitrax 210+. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are about a dozen different features of the ACM that you can use.? Since you mention my article, I will assume that you are trying to set up DCC control of your turntable.

Since you mention Digitrax, there are two things I need to mention.

One, without the ACM white cable plugged in, power up your Digitrax command station.? Wait at least 30 seconds for the Digitrax command station to sends its start up messages.? Then put the jumper on the ACM to DCC LEARN and plug in the white cable.??

Now follow the Walthers instructions for programming a track or two.

Move the jumper on the ACM to DCC ENABLE, disconnect the white cable for several seconds and then reconnect.? This will restart the ACM.

Test that the couple of tracks your programmed work.? If this works, set up all your other tracks.

Two, when I set up my turntable at home, I found the instructions for programming a track position and clearing were backwards.? I mentioned this in my column.? But I recently set up an ACM for my club, and things were not backwards.

Like I said, try programming a track or two as I outline above and try programming with "T".? If it doesn't work, try "C".? Once you are sure what your system wants to program a track, you should be good to go.

Note that once you have all your tracks programmed and returned the ACM to DCC ENABLE, all you will have to do is turn on your system and go.? You won't have to disconnect the white cable like you do for programming and you won't have to wait 30 seconds.

Please note that there is only so much I could squeeze into my two page column.? So be sure you read all the relevant Walthers instructions for additional information.

Allen,
Thanks for responding. Everything worked perfectly with the blue box that came with the turntable (except the electric?eye). But the unit has never failed.
The ACM did not for about four tries then it did. It all worked fine for 6-8 test spins, then I tried the next day and the ACM did not respond.
I unplugged and replugged the RJ-11 and it worked a few times then stopped working. This has been going on for about 5 months.
I have changed power wires, power locations etc, flipped the wires around, replaced 4-5 different RJ-ll cords. I gave up about 2 months ago.
I think that's all. (and it's a DCS 210+)
Thankyou
Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Since it worked sometimes and you have worked over the RJ phone cords, I'd look at the DCC signal coming into the ACM.? Since you probably don't have a scope to look at signal integrity, I'd connect your DCS210+ directly to the DCC input connector on the ACM with a short run of wire without the DCS210+ going to the rest of your layout.? Obviously, this isn't useful, but at least you will know the problem is DCC signal integrity.? Then we can go from there.

Allen,
You had an excellent idea of disconnecting the track. It worked. I reconnected the track and it failed.
So I started looking at engines on the track and decided?it was the MTH diesel. It's off the track now and all is well.....so far.
Thanks for the help.? (and if?changes? are made,?the RJ-11 has to be reset like you suggested.)
Cliff? ?

Cliff,

I'm glad you found the problem.??

I'll have to try a MTH locomotive and see what it does to the track signal.? I've got a couple packed away.? I've got a lot on my plate at the moment.? It may be a few weeks before I can unpack one and try it.

Good luck!

Allen,
I should have done more testing. It wasn't the MTH. I have a 6 stall roundhouse. It's powered with a "vampire" terminal strip.
I disconnected the power to?the strip and the ACM started working. I'll figure it out... later and report back.
thanks again
