Southern Maryland Amateur Radio Club (SMARC) Revitalization
3
Hi, all, At the 9 December 2022 SMARC meeting, I agreed to take on the task of surveying current, past, and potential new members regarding efforts to revitalize the SMARC. Please forward this email (and copy me) to anyone who may have an interest. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): Let*s get SMARC back on track, starting with in-person quarterly technical training sessions. First session: Date: Friday, 14 April 2023. Location: QTH (Home) of Vic 每 WA3YUV and Linda 每 KA3VNI Subject: NANO Vector Network Analyzer, Overview and Practical Uses (Never heard of a VNA? This session is for you. Have experience with a VNA? This session is also for you, come help with the session and show others) Note: You do not have to be a SMARC member to attend a training session. Membership is encouraged, however, as your dues will help support SMARC activities and the W3SMR (147.15 MHz) repeater. Please respond back to the group or directly to me at humbert1js@... with your responses to the following questions/comments, 1 每 4. Please respond no later than 31 January 2023. 1. Would you attend SMARC sponsored quarterly technical training sessions? For 2023, tentative session dates are 14 April, 14 July, and 13 October (2nd Fridays of the Quarter). 8 December 2023 would be the date of the annual SMARC holiday gathering. 2. For the 14 April 2023 session: Please let us know your name and call sign (if you have one), if you plan to attend. Vic, Linda, and I will then determine if there is enough interest to hold the session. A light dinner will be provided to entice you to come. 3. What future training topics would you like to see? Give us some ideas. 4. Are you willing to present a session? If so, what is the topic? **** Background: SMARC traces its roots back to ~1975. When I (Jeff 每 KB3SPH) joined SMARC in 2016, it was known for presenting/facilitating technical training sessions on various topics such as APRS, Antenna Analyzing, Go-Kit Demonstrations, Digital Mode Operation, and Antenna Building. SMARC also supports the W3SMR repeater operations. With the untimely death of SMARC President, Ken 每 KA3POX, in March 2021 and the COVID-19 pandemic, SMARC meetings/training sessions have mostly fallen by the wayside. The SMARC treasury, however, is in good condition due to a generous endowment from Ken*s estate and other donations. The treasury can currently support the anticipated repeater/antenna move from its current tower to a new nearby location. We want to decide as a group how to get back on track with regular meetings#or do we go to just an annual meeting and become a ※Repeater Support Club?§ Additional SMARC historical perspective, courtesy of Vic 每 WA3YUV: With the advent of cell phones and other distractions, we need to keep our repeaters on the air, maintained and certainly used. The SMARC repeater has been on the air since 1975 and only off the air for just a few days in that entire time. We have one of the best locations and some of the finest gear that make up the repeater. In times of emergency this repeater has proven to be an asset that is valuable to us and the community at large. A repeater support group will keep it on the air, but not keep us on the air and connected as a club. For the newcomers that may not know what SMARC is and had done. SMARC has had such a long history of teaching quality classes and was involved in so many operations over the almost 50 years since it was formed. When the club was first formed, we were at the Cheltenham communications station and had an 85 foot dish antenna that was used for EME bounce. Talk about a big antenna! The club was a major force in the 9/11 pentagon relief efforts with the Red Cross and Salvation Army. The club has supported Christmas in April and has travelled to local hospitals at Christmas to pass out toys to children in hospital. SMARC has had a Santa on the air net, so SMARC members could let children speak with Santa directly. For many years we were the Red Cross communicators for the Tri County area and had a mobile communications van. We had office space in the Red Cross he
