Field Day Summer 2022 at NCEEC - General Overview
Hi, Summer 2022 Field Day is nearly here. This year, our Field Day weekend will be held Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education Center (NCEEC), 5300 Turkey Tayac Place, Nanjemoy, MD 20662 (Charles County). For directions to the site, go to the link on the Southern Maryland Astronomical Society (SMAS) website: http://www.smas.us/html/directions_to_smas.html. FYI: There is no fee for the use of this site. NOTE 1: NCEEC is a facility of the Charles County School District, therefore, it is a smoke free, alcohol free and drug free zone. It is not a public park, nor a public campground. It is also a gated facility, with school staff on site during the day. If you want to visit the site ahead of time to plan your setup, do not try to visit the site by yourself! Contact me ahead of time at kb3sws@... OR humbertpj@..., to make an appointment to tour NCEEC. The Field Day invitation will also be extended to other hams in Southern Maryland, so feel free to forward this information to the hams on your list. NOTE 2: For those who want to set up early, we will be on site beginning on Friday, June 24. The gate will be unlocked at 3:00 PM. If you arrive on Friday, June 24, you have the option of staying overnight, or setting up your gear and returning on Saturday, June 25. The facility will be locked overnight. For Field Day, beginning on Saturday, June 25, we will open the gate by 9:00 AM, but you may arrive later in the day and depart at a time that fits your schedule. The gate will be open again by 9:00 AM on Sunday, June 26, if you are not staying overnight and returning for the second day, or attending on Sunday only. You may attend on Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday, for as long as your schedule allows. You are not required to stay overnight, in order to participate in our Field Day event. If you have not done so already, for planning purposes, please let me know if you will be attending, and on which day(s). According to the ARRL website, this year*s Summer Field Day operations will run from 1800 UTC (2:00 PM local) on Saturday, June 25 through 2059 UTC (4:59 PM Local) on Sunday, June 26. Additional information can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/field-day. In addition to the traditional ※radio, food and friendship,§ we plan to conduct two ※extracurricular§ activities. First, we will have a weekend long mini hamfest, so this will be a good chance for you to buy, sell, swap or give away the items of your choice. Second, as weather permits, we will conduct a ※walking§ fox hunt on the NCEEC site. Details are pending. This is a casual event. Individual hams may keep track of their contacts, but they will not necessarily submit results for awards. Others may keep track of their contacts, and submit them on an individual basis. Still others may keep track of their contacts, and coordinate with their respective clubs and submit them as a group. It is a good venue to practice setting up field stations, and some use this as continuing training for EMCOMM drills. It is also a good venue to test new equipment, and to get help from each other, when trying to solve problems or learn about new equipment and/or software. Set up locations will include the pavilion area and the cabin area. There are trees for hanging antennas, and large fields for setting up antennas in both areas. You may put stakes in the ground for securing setups, as needed. This is a good place for that ※proof of concept§ setup that does not fit in your own backyard. You can set up radios inside the pavilion, and/or cabins, and/or outside. There are outdoor picnic tables in both locations. There are tables and chairs inside the pavilion. You can also provide your own folding chairs, tables, yard canopies, etc., as desired. The pavilion has central air conditioning. This is also a good venue to visit if you simply want to see what happens at Field Day. You are welcome to attend without setting up your own gear. You can see the other stations in action and get on the air. Food/Beverages: Meal plans for the evening of Friday,
