Re: KM4ACK Video

Thanks. I watched the first hour and am intrigued. Eric and Terry have talked to me about flrig and I think, digirig. I started playing before I tore up the inside of my house and where I stopped I had determined that I'll need something akin to a USB-CAT cable to the FT857D. There was also talk of buying a device that "acts like a sound card". I'm going to bookmark this video until I get my antenna projects more stable. I'm interested in digital for low power and as Eric alludes to, that I can make and record contact w/o talking to people.

If nothing else, switching to a supported, open source, and free application is often appealing to many people.

Simplex 15 Apr 2025 20:00CDT PLEASE IGNORE PREVIOUS POST

Steve will be net control.
?
Third Tuesday at 20:00 hours is the reserved time for the club to try simplex nets.
Last month See notes we discussed whether to keep the monthly simplex. A final decision either way was not reached because we were absorbed testing 2M SSB. Since no one was vehemently opposed to a monthly simplex, I'll monitor the following frequencies and we will go from there. I still want to get going on JJ's idea about the club hosting an HF net.
?
144.15? LSB? This is in the band plan without stepping on the National Calling Frequency.
145.250 FM -0.6Mhz offset and CTCSS 110.9, our local repeater, will be the backup frequency.

Re: FCC Planning to ban Direct Conversion Receivers?

It's beyond time to ditch this old tech that is holding humanity back from the next great leap in evolution. This is what deregulation of the FCC has paved the way to. I've heard that foil will be banned next due to the unpredictable sporadic F-layer oscillations created when foil is wrapped around "rabbit ear" antennas. This creates more spurious interference to Starlink's low-earth constellations and quite literally "foils" the reach of the satellites' usable range. Furthermore, Reynolds Caps are proving an impediment to Starlink's plans of beaming Internet service directly into people's heads thus bypassing the need for expensive phased array antennas, modems or even computers. But just you watch, direct conversion receivers and aluminum foil are just the tip of the iceberg.

From the FCC News Line:

The Federal Communications Commission announced today that it will soon ban a wide range of communications equipment due to interference that this equipment is causing to Starlink communications satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The banned equipment includes a range of legacy analog-type circuitry that, according to the Commission, has "lost relevance" and constitutes "an archaic electromagnetic nuisance." Under the proposed Commission action, banned equipment will include all regenerative, super-regenerative, and direct conversion receivers.

The interference potential of regenerative receivers has been known since the 1920s. Direct Conversion receivers were thought to be less prone to Problematic Spurious Emission (PSE), but in recent months LEO satellites have experienced serious interference from terrestrial sources.
