Farmers Market Saturday

I failed to mention at the meeting last night that we'd be set up at the Farmers Market this Saturday from 9am - 1pm.? Located at the Endurance Church parking lot in West Plains. I hope everyone can come out and enjoy the day putting amateur radio on display and inviting others to join us.

Eric, KD0CEN

Kit Building!

Edited

Our Kit Build get together is coming up in just over a week. If you are planning on joining in on the fun, you need to get your kit ordered ASAP if you haven't done so already!

Several websites were suggested during last night's club meeting. Below I am listing a few ideas for kits based on low-cost and ease of assembly. You are welcome to pick one of these or explore the sites and pick something else.

  • - Small Dummy Load
  • - Code Practice Oscillator
  • - 11db Step Attenuator
  • - 41db Step Attenuator
  • - Dual Band Trap Dipole Antenna
  • - Manual HF Antenna Tuner
And a couple more ambitious kit if you need a challenge:
  • - A unique Dummy Load for hotel "DX" contests.
  • - 40m Receiver
  • - ATU-100 Automatic Antenna Tuner

If you are new to electronics and soldering, I suggest sticking with the first two or three ideas. Also, I highly recommend watching a YouTube video or two on proper soldering techniques. Soldering is a skill that anyone can learn with a little practice. Here's a short video to get you started:

I'll see you on the 25th @ 1pm at The Battery Station!

Re: New Ham Question

Being in a valley won’t help for sure. You should be able to get into the 444.425 via HT anywhere in town I believe. ?Also make sure your power is set to high.

I surely appreciate your kindness. ?I look forward to meeting you all tomorrow. ?I’ll bring it into town today and try from higher ground. ?I am in a little valley that’s fairly wooded.

Just checked the 146.940 and 444.425 to confirm both are working. They’re are probably your best bet with an HT from where you’re at. I’ll try to monitor this afternoon but probably won’t be in the area. I’m sure others will be monitoring if you get it figured out and throw your callsign out.?

We also have a club meeting tomorrow night if you would like to bring it by we’ll figure it out.?

I have an Explorer QRZ-1 HT from the JumpStart program for newly licensed hams. ?Squelch was preset to 5, I’ve lowered to 2 at your suggestion. ?When I press the MONI button to suppress the squelch I do hear the static but nothing when I press PTT. ?The same for all the repeaters I’ve programmed.

Re: New Ham Question

What all repeaters do you have programmed? If you hold the PTT button for just a second and release it, do you hear the repeater? It should stay open for another half a second or so then Nunley. If you’re not hearing that, make sure your offset is correct and CTCSS tone is correct.?

New Ham Question

Good morning, all! I am a new ham with a new HT. I have not yet made a contact but not for lack of trying. I have 5 of our local repeaters programmed into my HT but thus far have heard nothing but what I believe is CW. Is anyone available to review these settings and tell me if I’ve made an error? Thank you so much! I look forward to interacting with all of you!
