VoIP Hurricane Net Activation – Hurricane Hilary and Impacts to Northwest Mexico and the Southwest United States – Sunday 8/20/23

Hello to all...

Please see the link below regarding details on the VoIP Hurricane Net Activation for Hurricane Hilary and impacts to Northwest Mexico and the Southwest United States for Sunday 8/20/23:

Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Director of Operations for the VoIP Hurricane Net

VoIP Hurricane Prep Net Topic Tonight - Hurricane Hilary Activation Sunday

Hello to all...

For tonight's VoIP Hurricane Prep Net, we will discuss WX4NHC & VoIP Hurricane Net activation for Hurricane Hilary on Sunday 8/20/23 starting at 8 AM EDT/5 AM PDT. Hilary will affect Northwest Mexico as a hurricane and Southern California and Southwest Arizona as a tropical storm, the first tropical storm to hit this area since 1939. While our net and WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio station at the National Hurricane center, dont typically stay active when a hurricane degrades to a tropical storm, the historic nature of Hilary's impact to the southwest US will warrant us to stay active through the day into late Sunday Evening to support this area. We will be looking to line up stations in this part of the Southwest US and Northwest Mexico or stations with relays into this area for our net activation Sunday. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

73,Rob-KD1CY.
Director of Operations for the VoIP Hurricane Net

[voip-wx-net-control] 12 August 2023 VOIP SKYWARN Hurricane Preparedness Weekly Net Station Check-in List

Subject: [voip-wx-net-control] 12 August 2023 VOIP SKYWARN Hurricane Preparedness Weekly Net Station Check-in List
To: <[email protected]>

Question of the week: How many years have you been involved in Skywarn?

14 Voice Check-ins:

Primary Net Control Operator: KB9LXH>Joe, McKee KY. Comments are given under SKYWARN Coordinators/Liaisons.

Back-Up Net Control Operator (BUNCO): K2DCD> Dennis, Columbus, NJ. Comments are given below under VOIP Hurricane Net Management Team

VOIP Hurricane Net Management Team Member (3):

K2DCD> Dennis, Columbus, NJ, Assistant Director of Operations, VoIP Hurricane Net, reported a temperature of 81F, Humidity of 69%, and a south wind at 10 MPH. Also said several tornado and severe thunderstorm watches occurred in the past week.

KD1CY>Rob, New Bedford, MA Director of Operations, VoIP Hurricane Net provided a brief report on local conditions warranting SKYWARN activations in his area of operations (Norton/Boston) to include two 2 tornado warnings (later resulting in an EF-0 and an EF-1) along with flash flooding in parts of their CWA. Rob then gave the following tropical updates:

  • For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico: Tropical cyclone formation was not expected during the next 7 days.

  • For the eastern North Pacific...east of 140 degrees west longitude:

    • The National Hurricane Center issued advisories on T.S. Fernanda (which was identified as T.D. Seven-E during the net), located several hundred miles south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. At 900 PM MDT (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Fernanda was located near latitude 15.0 North, longitude 114.0 West, or about 610 Miles ((80 km) SSW of the southern tip of Baja California (and over 2700 hundred miles ESE of Hilo, Hawaii). Fernanda was moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h) with the motion expected to continue through the next few days at a slightly slower forward speed. Maximum sustained winds had increased to near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Steady to rapid strengthening is forecast during the next day or two, and the system is expected to become a hurricane by Monday. Tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure was 1004 mb (29.65 inches). There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect. This system, depending on the development over the coming days, may cross into the Central Pacific basin next Thursday or Friday.

    • In the Western East Pacific (EP99): A broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave was producing a large area of disorganized showers well to the east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands (at approximately 1500 miles). Conditions appear conducive for the development of this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the next few days while moving toward the west or west-northwest at about 10 mph across the far western portion of the basin, crossing into the Central Pacific basin Sunday night. Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...60 percent. Formation chance through 7 days...high...80 percent.

    • Off the Coast of Southern Mexico: A tropical wave over Central America and the far eastern Pacific was producing a large area of disturbed weather. Environmental conditions are anticipated to be conducive to the development of this system, and a tropical depression is expected to form during the early or middle part of next week while it moves generally west-northwestward, or roughly parallel to the coast of southern and southwestern Mexico. Formation chance through 48 hours...low...20 percent. Formation chance through 7 days...high...90 percent.

  • For the central North Pacific...between 140W and 180W: Outside T.S. Fernanda and EP99 (both currently in the eastern North Pacific), no additional tropical cyclones were expected during the next 7 days.

KC5FM>Lloyd, Arkansas City, KS, reported that 14.345 MHz USB is in use for the Pacific Area Net and the ARRL has requested all amateur stations not directly involved with AuxComm or EmComm activities regarding the Maui, Hawaiian fire disaster to avoid using 7.088 MHz (LSB is in use for CW traffic and USB in use for WinLink traffic). From ARRL: Devastating Hawaii Wildfires Prompt Response from Amateur Radio Emergency Service In addition, KC5FM provided the “Question of the Week” (above), as well as the following Storm Prediction Center Outlook for the Continental United States (CONUS):

  • For tonight (Saturday), the severe-weather risk will continue this evening across parts of the upper Ohio Valley and Northeast, as well as parts of South Dakota and Nebraska, and over portions of the Kansas and Oklahoma vicinity.

    • Scattered to widespread thunderstorms are ongoing across New York, Pennsylvania, and portions of surrounding states ahead of an advancing and?segmented cold front crossing the lower Great Lakes/Ohio Valley.

    • Elsewhere, ahead of a short-wave trough digging southeastward out of western Canada toward the northern High Plains, thunderstorms are ongoing across southern and western South Dakota. The convection is occurring in a zone of moderate instability, and as a south-southwesterly low-level jet continues to strengthen. With 35 to 45 kt mid-level west-southwesterly flow atop the low-level southwesterlies, shear will continue to support locally intense updrafts this evening, along with attendant risk for large hail and locally damaging wind gusts as storms gradually spread southeastward toward northern Nebraska.

    • Meanwhile, in Southern Kansas south to the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma, and eastward toward the Ozarks, a developing southerly low-level jet across the southern Plains will maintain fairly widespread convection this evening and into the overnight period -- particularly across the Kansas/Oklahoma areas. With an amply unstable air mass in place away from areas where substantial precipitation has already occurred, and given favorably strong/veering flow with height, isolated instances of hail/wind will remain possible with the strongest updrafts.

  • On Sunday (Day 2), there are marginal and slight risks?of?severe?thunderstorms?from the Southern and Central Great Plains to the Middle Mississippi, Lower Ohio, and Tennessee Valleys as well as in Maine, and portions of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. The main hazards in all locations identified at this time are damaging winds and hail.

  • On Monday (Day 3), there are marginal to slight risks of severe weather affecting the Middle and Upper Ohio Valley, Middle Appalachians, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern New England with severe thunderstorms possible during the afternoon and evening hours. Areas of slight risk include Central and Eastern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Southern and southeastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, most of West Virginia, southwest and northwest Virginia, and western Maryland. The main hazards at this time include damaging winds and hail.

  • As for Days 4 through 8 or Tuesday, August 15 through Sunday, August 20, 2023: the potential threat for a regional area of organized severe storms appears too low to predict or is unlikely to occur as of net time, except for on Day 5 or Wednesday, August 16, 2023, where SPC has indicated a 15% probability of severe weather affecting portions of the Dakotas into Minnesota.

VoIP Hurricane Prep Net for Saturday July 1st, 2023 Canceled Due to Proximity to US Indepdence Day Holiday on Tuesday 7/4/23

Hello to all...

With the July 4th US Holiday on Tuesday and the likelihood that many will potentially be traveling or doing other holiday activities, we will cancel the Saturday July 1st VoIP Hurricane Prep Net. We will resume the weekly net on Saturday July 8th, 2023. If a tropical system were to threaten a land area, we would activate the VoIP Hurricane Net as needed. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!
