Graham W. Van Note (1937-2024)
Graham W. Van Note Mar 23, 1937 - Dec 24, 2024 Graham W. Van Note, 87, passed away at his home in Annapolis, MD, on December 24, 2024. Graham was born in Laurelton (Brick), NJ, on March 23, 1937, the son of Graham Ferry Van Note and Helen Reid (Clayton) Van Note. He grew up with his five siblings on the family farm near the Metedeconk River. Graham was a proud member of the Garnet Gulls varsity football team at Point Pleasant High School and was recognized as a distinguished alumnus in 2004. Following his graduation from high school in 1955, Graham enlisted in the US Navy. During this time, he was part of the Nuclear Weapons Training Center, Pacific, seeing the world aboard an aircraft carrier. His Navy service included time in San Diego and Albuquerque. This was the start of his love of the Southwest. After his honorable discharge, Graham attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and completed his degree in accounting in 1965. After college Graham began his 24-year distinguished career as a Special Agent of the FBI. He advanced to the level of Supervisory Special Agent and Unit Chief, specializing in intelligence investigations. He was selected as the Department of Justice representative to the National War College (1982-83) at Fort McNair, and was named to the Surveys and Investigations Executive Staff of the House Committee on Appropriations (1986-89) first as Assistant Director and then as Director. He greatly enjoyed his opportunities to travel the world during this part of his tenure. Among his many professional accomplishments, he managed the counterintelligence case against Richard Miller, the first FBI agent accused of espionage, in 1984-85. Graham retired from the Bureau in 1989 but did not stay retired for long. Some of his retirement jobs included remodeling work and conducting background investigations, but he didn’t let work get in the way of enjoying life. He cultivated his love of gardening each year (growing the best tomatoes ever); enjoyed frequent fishing trips in Baja with friends; was frequently found in his woodshop making tables, bookcases, and framing tiles; was continuously engaged in indoor and outdoor home improvement projects; and enthusiastically embraced his love of road trips. Madeline (Cordeiro) Van Note (1951-2023)
Madeline (Cordeiro) Van Note, aged 71, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 7th, just shy of her 72nd birthday. Madeline was born on May 19, 1951 to Manuel and Mary Cordeiro, along with her identical twin sister, Catherine, and raised in Fairfax, CA. Often pictured in matching outfits, the twins both loved to play dodgeball and dance to soul music. Twin life was fun until she had to get her tonsils out, because her sister had to get hers out too! A supportive pair, she accompanied her sister Catherine on her first date with her future husband, Jim. Madeline graduated from Sir Francis Drake High School in 1969 and later graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in San Francisco. She worked full-time as a R.N. in the maternity unit at Marin General Hospital and passionately cared for the new babies and their mothers. After her marriage to Larry Van Note in 1975, they settled in San Rafael, CA and she was blessed with her first child in 1976. She left work to be a stay-at-home mother and lovingly raised a total of three children. When her children were old enough to attend school, she worked part time as a nurse. At age 39 when her children were still young, Madeline was diagnosed with breast cancer. With immense strength she survived the cancer, though complications caused her significant pain that lasted the rest of her life. Living through this pain was difficult, yet she found joy through music, family, friendships and her relationship with God, along with helping others. She was an active parishioner of St. Isabella's Church where she was a singer and guitar player in their music group and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Madeline graciously volunteered for years, entertaining senior residents, having performed at the Nazareth House and Rafael Convalescent Hospital. She was active in the Marin Cursillo community where she helped put on Christian retreats. Additionally, she was in the Mother of God Prayer Group at the Carmelite Monastery in Marinwood. Proud of her Portuguese heritage, Madeline enjoyed participating in the local festas and parades, including the year her daughter was the Queen of Sausalito's IDESST Portuguese Hall in 1997. She greatly enjoyed visiting her extended Portuguese family in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Madeline delighted in playing tennis, attending music concerts, and shopping at thrift stores. She was an avid swimmer and taught cardiac rehab swim classes at the Marin YMCA. Madeline will be remembered for her exuberant, joyful, and caring personality, wanting most to alleviate others' suffering and bring love and kindness to everyone she encountered. Madeline is survived by her children Andrea (Glenn) Killion, Anthony (Ann Marie) Van Note, and Mary (Ben) Aller; her grandchildren Myla Killion, Della Mora Aller, and Aiden, Arianna, and Austin Van Note; her former spouse Larry Van Note; her twin sister Catherine Sandy; and her nieces Ann-Marie Dennison and Leanne Lee. Her immediate family will hold a private memorial. A mass in Madeline's name will be on her birthday, May 19th, at St. Isabella's Church at 8:30am in San Rafael, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to World Vision International or NAMI.
