Spanish Trail Motel
Bill,
This is the old Spanish Train motel. A pretty deluxe place in its time, it was in a key location at the beginning of the pre-I-10 Benson Highway. Don't know anything about the model train. I suspect that was a later addition. It was a significant venue. I once saw the Duke Ellington Orchestra there. It was in the late summer of 1966, when I was just out of just out of Rincon High. My girlfriend and I were the youngest people in the audience and amazed everybody by getting up to dance. Ken Kenneth A. Ethridge, AIA C 214/316-2476 ken@... Great story, Ken. It was a truly swanky music venue in it's heyday. The current owner gave VanishingTucson members a tour of the place a few years ago. Photos in the Spanish Trail folder, here... Thanks, Carlos --- In vanishingtucson@..., "kenethridge66" <ken@...> wrote:

I too remember the glorious Spanish Trail in its hey days ... We only went a few times mainly a special occasion like a anniversary or birthday. Sometimes you'd see fancy dressed folks and once we seen Joe Bonnano's son with some characters that looked straight out of the Godfather. We heard that Joe Jr was a regular at the barber shop there . Years later I worked as a nurse at the Veterans Hospital on S 6th Ave and met some Vets who were going thru addiction programs that were living in the outside motel rooms at the Spanish Trail . I don't think it's being used anymore and it's all being torn down. But I bet if those old walls and that ballroom could talk that would make one big interesting story of the Tales of Tucson !!!!
