I remember it. An air force plane crashed into it. It's the shopping center where Pat's Cake Supply and the Golf Shop are at now. On the south side of the Cactus Bowling Alley.

My sister is waiting to become a member and we were just talking about this.

There was a plane crash at a Food Giant supermarket and another at the U of A. There might have been a third. She's the expert on that, so maybe she'll pipe up.

I'm Bjay's sister. She asked me to pipe in about the plane crashes.

In October, 1967, a small passenger plane was forced to land accidentally in
the Utterback schoolyard. Two months later, a DMAFB plane crashed into the
Food Giant store on Alvernon Way, a short distance from Keen Elementary.
Discussion with the various official agencies resulted in some changes in
flight patterns. Ten years later in October, 1978, a jet fighter crashed
next to Mansfeld Junior High and the University of Arizona. Two young women
were killed on 6th Street, but no TUSD students were physically harmed.

These incidents are also outlined in this website:

The link also contains this: In 1959, a woman was struck and killed when
part of a plane fell off the wing of a B-47 Stratojet. That plane didn't
crash. The accident occurred near the site of the 1967 crash, about a
half-mile farther south on Alvernon Way.

My mother was present at the Food Giant when the plane crashed.

I was living in Milwaukee at the time, saw the reports on the crash on the national news and called my mother immediately.

At the time, she lived on Palo Verde and did most of her shopping at the Food Giant. Back in those days there were "carryout boys" and if your groceries were carried out to the car they expected a tip. Now my mother was perfectly able to carry her own groceries but, being a long-time teacher in TUSD, she had a soft spot in her heart for these boys. So, she would usually take "a quarter" out of her purse to give to the selected carryout boy.

She said when she was shopping that day she only had a few bags and was almost going to skip having them carried out. But she said something inside made her change her mind and she told the boy to carry out her bags.

As the bags were being loaded into the car, the plane crashed into the grocery.

My mother calmly got into her car and drove home. I told her to call D-M in case they wanted to interview her about the crash but I don't think she ever did.

I always thought ... "there by the grace of God" ... if my mother hadn't had that sense that she should have the boy carry out her groceries chances are he would have been inside the market and killed, as the others were.

My mother lived to be almost 92 years old and I hope the carryout boy went on to have a wonderful life as well.

One of the things I missed about Tucson was hearing the jets (we lived under the flight path). Thus I don't really have any sympathy for those who complain about the noise. To me the jets are the sound of freedom. With all the hazards of today's life, a jet crash is among the least of my worries.

Joanna, Your comment about being in the flight path brought back lots
of memories. My Pre-teenager years I grew up on Miles St. and Highland,
played a whole bunch the the area around Arroyo Chico, but I remebmber
the planes flying over my house all the time, especially the B-36
Peacemakers. The whole house shook when those flew over. Jim

Wow, thanks for sharing your story! That's amazing.

I happen to live in the fight path. It's not the noise so much that bothers me, it's the jet fuel that must come raining down on my house several times a day since they fly so low overhead.

I used to live on the south side, and moved the to the east side to get away from the planes. Then they started to fly over my house several times a day within the past couple years. So they keep following me! haha.

-I can say that I was there too. I was all but 5 months old at the
time but I have heard the story everytime a plane goes down. My Mama
and Gramma was at the laundry mat all morning. My Gramma said I was
begining to wine and she said I was nervous for no reason. THey
hurried up and packed the car with out folding the last load of
clothes. They had just pulled out of the parking lot when my gramma
checked her mirror and saw the plane coming down. She alomst hit a car
trying to get out of the parking lot. She said she had never felt so
blessed. To this day I look at that corner in a whole different
light.....
