picture of horses standing inside an old bar at Mission and Ajo

Hi there,?

I'm trying to track down a picture of horses standing inside a bar from a long, long time ago in Tucson.? Maybe the 50s?

I got to see the photo at the restaurant at Ryan Field many years ago.? I understand that the restaurant has since changed owners and the photo is not there anymore.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Mary B

Hi Mary B,

The old bar at the southwest corner of Mission and Ajo was the Mission Club.? There was also a Tojo's Bar next to it in later years, after the Mission Club went defunct, perhaps same owners.? The picture with the horses was taken inside the Mission Club and a copy of the photo is in Opha Probasco's book:

I recall my grandmother telling that the Mission Club was owned by the Probasco family, but Opha probably describes the origins in his book.? It's a good read, describing a great deal of what life was like along S. Mission Road and the surrounding area in the 30's thru 50's.

Interesting that the a copy of the photo ended up out at the Ryan Field eatery...

Hope this helps.? Happy New Year!

- Matt

I found two pictures in the book about the Tucson Mountains - the pictures were taken at Mission Club which was there at Mission and Ajo I can¡¯t post the pictures here due to copyright issues but can sent to you via text or email with the name of the book I got them from - it also talks about the huge swimming pool that used to be there
