Airport Tower Grill Restaurant
They tore it down today :(? Can anyone tell me if a survey was done on it before they ripped it apart?? I know it was in a bad state, found some older articles on it (can't tell when they were written since the newspaper website didn't think to put a date on it....thanks....)? I will do a write up as I have before and after photos if one isn't already done.? Is there any way to find out when these things are going to happen?? I know certain areas of town are being torn down for widening and most of the buildings have been surveyed (although the one that is in the midst of coming down on Grant I don't think was), but this one was important and was over the 50 year mark.?? Dang it!

Have the articles and the architect, will do a survey/write up.? Both the restaurant and the hotel were done by Tucson's own, Art Brown.? Another Brown lost - not sure what is happening with the hotel, I believe its being used as offices for TAA. Catherine |
Hello Catherine,
Unfortunately, it seems as if the control tower is the only structure that is being intentionally preserved. Do you know who designed the tower? When you get some images, please upload them to the Airports album. ?I'll look, too. All we have now is a postcard of the old Rontel Motel, which has been remodeled beyond all recognition. ? Thanks, Carlos |
I called the station in regards to the interview that was done with the previous restauranteur.? No call back. I am continuing to work on the story. There are several websites with information on Arthur Brown and his wonderful work.? There is also a small book that was published through the university that is available at most libraries and the historical society on 2nd street near the university.? I don't think it has a photo of the building but it's a nice collection of his work. I believe the family still has Mr. Brown's collection, as well as several home owners that have their original plans.? Some were good enough to leave the plans with the house when they sold. Terry Atkinson designed the terminal in 1963. The tower, however, was designed by Place and Place, with Harold Ashton, contractor in 1957. So Carlos, did you hear they are going to take down the old hotel?? I thought they were still using that for offices, but perhaps they are going to move.? I'll add that to the survey and get some photos. Catherine |
