mystery picture - Oxford Plaza?

Hi All,

This is an easy one. But for me it illustrates how easy it is to
forget a building (or a mall) so soon after it is demolished.

I took this pic of the Oxford Plaza sign in 2004, and now I can't
remember where it was. Look in the "Malls" folder, here:

Did this sign rotate?

Who were some of the "31 MERCHANTS TO SERVE YOU"?

Thanks,

Carlos

It did for many years but was broken for at least the last decade.

I believe there was a Cloth World or Hancock's there as well as a furniture store, maybe Sid's? I think there was a supermarket at one time, something like a Food Giant and I vaguely remember a Denny's being in that center. Can't remember any of the other merchants.

The supermarket at the very west end became a COWBOYS male revue in
the 80s!

Oxford Plaza - Let's see.... Cloth World, but now I'm not sure. Was
it Hancock's? There was a grocery store there at one time. I used to
go there with my aunt. I took gymnastics and dance lessons at Beverly
Fridel's Dance Studio at the west end of the plaza. There was a
laundry mat at the far west end.... chipped my tooth on a glass soda
pop bottle from a soda machine there. Later on there was a Buffalo
Exchange where the laundry mat used to be. I think there was a liquor
store at the east end. Can't remember anything else. Need to read the
rest of the posts and maybe my memory will be sparked.

Pant Warehouse was in the middle of old the shopping center - then
it moved away for a while then it came back to the east end of the
complex right around the time of the remodel of Oxford Plz... then
they all went out of business

Hi all,

I've been scanning old ads and this is what I've come across so far.

May's Fashions was in Oxford Plaza as of 11/79
Pant Warehouse was still in Oxford Plaza as of 12/80
H.P. Cassidy's (restaurant & bar) was in Oxford Plaza as of 6/82

That's it. I've found lots of other interesting stuff - Browse Around,
Tail O' the Cock, Pistol Pete's Pizza, the Great Getaway Motel,
Sprouse Reitz, Ralph's Rancho, Niks Chiks & Fliks, etc.

I think the fabric store there was always (and still is) a Hancock's.
Next door to it (to the west) was a Thrifty's Drugstore.

There was also a shoe store,Jerry's shoes there about 68 to 70.

to have Easter egg hunts there every year. Next to that was Thrifty
Drug . The cloth store was a "Hancocks" and then there was an S.S.
Kressges which later became an Elaine Powers Figure salon. Further
east on the strip was a shoe repair shop and a barber. In the
upstairs portion there was a navy recruiting office. There used to
be a Gas station in the parking lot in the corner at 22nd and wilmot
and also the restaurnat was a "Bob's Big Boy" It had the huge Big
Boy statue standing outside. -

Thrifty Drug had ice cream for a nickel a scoop -- the scoops were cylindrical. At one
point in the mid-70's there was a pinball arcade on the west side of Oxford Plaza called
"Spanky's" that was a major teen hangout. Also Dick's Toy & Hobby down near where
Pants Warehouse eventually opened up. Also, if I remember right, the shop on the eastern
corner was a drive in liquor store in the 60's and early 70's.

I loved this thread as I spent from about third grade through high
school (~75-85) living within one mile of Oxford Plaza. Most everyone
has pointed out the high points - El Rancho Market which became
Cowboys night club that had teen nights while I was in High School;
Spanky's - a pre video game arcade and the only memorable place I ever
went with my father the one time I met him; Thrifty with the
clindrical Ice Cream cones that were a dime per scoop; Hancock Fabric;
Bob's Big Boy.

There was also a small sporting goods store there where I got my first
pair of Nikes (canvas); a Donut bakery; and a video store (I think it
was Captain Video) that had VHS and Beta!
