Re: Wilmot Plaza (Sid's TV and Appliances)
Hello All, ? Thanks for the Sid¡¯s topic.? Some people couldn¡¯t find the ads, so I grabbed a few and added them to a new album called ¡°Sid¡¯s¡±.? That¡¯s the best way to share stuff around here, because other websites come and go, and links can change.? The easy way to see new photos is by clicking on the ¡°recent photos¡±, but the best way to peruse all photos is by clicking ¡°photos¡±, then ¡°albums¡±, then click ¡°actions¡± and select ¡°alphabetical¡±.? This is way they appeared in the old days before Yahoo changed the format to look more like Facebook.? Nowadays the only way to stop the slideshow and zoom in on a photo seems to be to download the photo and view it on your computer. ?Right? ?It is absolutely worth the extra effort if the image has a lot of detail. Like that amazing photo of Johnies from 1971. ?I hope MrsVKirby will tell us more about that one, pleeeeeeease. ? ? Anyway, back to Sid¡¯s¡ ? https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/vanishingtucson/photos/albums/1567863083 ? Does anyone remember the ¡°Feud-A-Thon¡± with Glenn Adams on KAIR 1490 versus Danny Day on KCUB 1290?? Were those stations playing rock and roll in 1959? ? Great sketch of a ¡°modern housewife¡± watching the circus. ? I especially love the ¡°South Sea Islands atmosphere¡± advertisement.? Seems like Tiki found it¡¯s way into everything back in ¡¯57. ? I also clipped a few of the many charicatures of Sid. I¡¯m curious what he actually looked like. ? Cheers, ? Carlos |

Casa Molina Speedway & Wilmot - the bull
Not only do I not have pictures of this - but even the old-timers still working at Casa Molina do not remember when the bull was in front of the restaurant right near Speedway instead of on the side of the parking lot as it is now. I was first taken to the restaurant as an infant when it was recently opened and we've been having family gatherings there ever since. I remember the bull was much smaller than the one that's there now at the west boundary of the parking lot adjacent to the parking lot of the next building over. The smaller one was almost straight south of the main entrance and very near Speedway. It was frequently getting damaged by cars leaving the parking lot backing into it. The final damage was so bad that they removed it and built the new one which exists to this day. Can anyone confirm the earlier, smaller bull statue? Or am I dreaming? |

Re: Wilmot Plaza
But to those of us who were not technologically savvy, the dawn of the "living color" age was fascinating! I can remember our family gathering in front of the huge RCA console on Sunday evenings to watch Bonanza. That fire burning through the Ponderosa map to reveal bright blue sky is etched in my memory! It was interesting to see the commercials produced in color before many of the shows. Advertisers are always looking for an edge. |

Re: Wilmot Plaza
Sid's Appliance was a mile south, in Oxford Plaza at 22nd & Wilmot (NE corner).
In the fall of '65, Sid's had a large (for the time, probably a round-tube RCA) color TV in the front window; many evenings they would have channel 4 on with the latest NBC color shows!? I wonder if they left it on when KVOA switched from the network feed to a wobbly 2-inch video tape they recorded a week earlier...or an even crummier 16mm film print which was at least two weeks old.? Good ol' channel 4! Of course, 9 and, at times, 13, were nothing to write home about either back in the 1960s. |

Re: 6th & Tucson, Rincon Market the 40's ?
Sorry couldn't see photo (probably my computer), so if I'm answering your question incorrectly, let me know.? Rincon Market was at 1803 Hawthorne (where the UA tennis courts are now, Hawthorne continued west before) until August 1967.? Savory's Market opened at 2513 E. 6th in 1953, but the earliest business I found at that location was Thorne's Market, which opened in 1948.? I think it was a new building.? The assessors office has a date of 1953, but it may have been an update that Savory's did when they moved in.? Rincon Market opened in 1926 according to the website.
Possibly more info than you were looking for :) Catherine |

Ernie Menehune, Aloha & RIP, In Memorium
Hello VT friends,
You may have heard, Tucson's most-beloved Hawaiian crooner Ernie Menehune passed away in March:
? This is very short notice, but there is a memorial for him at Tucson Estates today at 5:30 pm, in the Multi-purpose Hall, 5900 Western Way Circle. Doors open at 4:30. It is a casual affair, and if you have a favorite Hawaiian shirt you like to wear, that would be most welcome. I will be posting pix of Ernie from years past in the Tiki photo album, and anyone who has pix as well I hope will post, as well as stories. There are some fun videos on YouTube from performances past as well as epidodes of the Public Access program Ambassador of Aloha he was on. Here is a video from years past of his famous Hula Show at the Kon Tiki bar:There is a more formal religious memorial planned for Friday, April 10th at the Ft. Lowell Assembly of God Church, 3198 N. Flowing Wells Rd. at 6pm. If any VT members have questions, such as sending flowers, etc. please email me for information. Mahalo, Lacey |

?
Hello All, Sorry for the last minute notice, but Thursday night may be the last chance for us to speak out against the Broadway widening demolitions. This is the single most destructive project since the urban renewal of the 1960's and 70's.? I've seen all the plans, and the current six lane plan can be built without a single historic demolition.? And fewer demolitions will save millions of tax dollars.? If we can prevent the demolitions, I'm predicting that Broadway from Euclid to Country Club will become very much like Congress and Fourth Avenue, but in a funky, Mid Century Modern way. The official public comment period is over, but we can still make our views known, or simply show up to support the Citizens Task Force, which, in my view, is being bullied by the City.? Please come to the Broadway Citizens Task Force meeting.? Start time is?5:30 p.m., Thurs., March 26 Location is 1200 N. Campbell, activity building at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church Years from now, our grandchildren will be glad we helped save Broadway from being turned into an urban highway. Thanks, Carlos
