Re: Kiddyland

?I worked at Kiddyland as a kid.? Yes there is a Maple street. Going North from Speedway you had Helen, Maple, Drachman, Adams, Lee, and? Elm.? Lived on Adams east of Tucson Blvd. I? think Elm had several names and finally have ended up now being Pima. Ran several rides, but like the merry Go Round as we used a salt timer to time the rides.

Re: Kiddyland

I have a 1943 street map of Tucson, it shows that Alvernon North of 5thj was called Maple.

RE: Kiddyland on "Speedway just east of Maple"

Hi, Azbluewhale:
The piccie has '1949' handwrit on it. Alas, the 1943 map posted on VT ends at Winstel, and does not indicate whether Alvernon had been named Maple at the time or if there had been a minor Maple street just east of Alvernon.
Cheers,
Les.

and noticed the lettering indicated the location as "Speedway east of Maple". I had always remembered the amusement park being in the NE quadrant of Speedway and Alvernon. There a currently no streets named Maple in that area although there are several named after trees such as Walnut and Sycamore. Is it possible that when the area was redevleoped that Maple St was eliminated? Or am I misremembering the location of Kiddyland?

[VT] 201509171800: "Growing Up in Tucson" panel discussion, UA Special Collections (Cherry/University)

Howdy:
Got history? From now until 14-JAN-2016, UA's Special Collections library's "Tucson: Growth, Change and Memories" exhibit -- -- can be seen, with photos and other ephemera from the 1950s and 1960s (brochures touting the then-latest in fabulous suburban residential living to photos documenting the bulldozing of the barrios south of downtown to make way for the TCC complex) on display. But next Thursday (17th) will be a special treat, a "Growing Up in Tucson" panel discussion among four native Tucsonans -- professor and author Lydia Otero (_La Calle: Spatial Conflicts and Urban Renewal in a Southwest City_), Pima County District 5 Supervisor Richard Elias, business owner Katya Peterson (daughter of Tucson's beloved and iconic Cele Peterson), and former City Councillor Molly McKasson. Salients below, details way below.

Tucson Modernism Week event

This doensn't have anything to do with historical architecture, but it's an interesting part of Tucson Modernism Week anyway.

There will be presentations on the history and development of the Firebird III by two of the original designers on Oct 3 at the Museum of Contemporary Art on S. Church St. There will also be a vintage car show with examples of the "finned-era" of cars from 1941 to mid-1970.

Re: bomb shelter under Broadway Village?

I remember "Civil Defense" signs in the basement under Palo Verde gym in 1971.? I always assumed some sort of fallout shelter.

Re: bomb shelter under Broadway Village?

What is now Academy Loft Apartments (6th Ave and 15th), used to the be the Catholic Academy, had a bomb shelter. When they were renovating it I was allowed in with the construction manager (after getting permission from the owner) and I saw the original yellow sign, which they saved.? They also found hidden tins of hard candy kept for the students as well as an old pack of cigarettes hidden in the wall :)? I was told it was one of the few bomb shelters in the older downtown area.? Since the original first story and a half was built in the 1880's/90's, it must have been the original cellar and converted into a bomb shelter.

Re: bomb shelter under Broadway Village?

Buildings with public fallout shelters were clearly marked. I don't recall whether or not there was a shelter in Broadway Village. My neighborhood shelter was at the VFW at Craycroft and 29th St.

I used to know where a bunch of them were located, but time has erased those memories, or at least buried them pretty well.

Re: bomb shelter under Broadway Village?

The yellow air raid sirens didn't denote a shelter area. They were a part of Tucson until mid 80's? Growing up here you always knew when it was 1pm Saturday afternoons
As the sirens would sound for one minute.
Cool and eerie at the same time.

P.S. Palo Verde High Shool was rumored to have fallout shelter and armory for national guard.

bomb shelter under Broadway Village?

Hi, VT'ans:
Ann's comment about Broadway reminded me to ask about a huge cellar, possibly originally built as a bomb shelter, under Broadway Village.

The acquaintance who relayed this had grown up in the Broadmoor neighborhood (he was born in '61) and used to go to the drug store that was there at the time (I believe in the space that most recently was Zocalo and now will be the new grocery store). One day the owner(? I think?) showed him the basement (accessed through a door in the back) which was being used for storage, but had been kitted out with electric power and looked to my acquaintance like it could have been a neighborhood shelter. There used to be a yellow siren-looking thing atop a pole on the NEC Country Club/ Broadway, which could corroborate my acquaintance's anecdote.

The construction guys on the site Wednesday (26th) doing the interior demo/remodel work knew nothing about it, so perhaps it had been sealed off or my acquaintance was mis-remembering.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Les.

Subject: [vanishingtucson] last chance to speak out against Broadway widening demolitions

?
Hello All,

Sorry for the last minute notice, but Thursday night may be the last chance for us to speak out against the Broadway widening demolitions. This is the single most destructive project since the urban renewal of the 1960's and 70's.? I've seen all the plans, and the current six lane plan can be built without a single historic demolition.? And fewer demolitions will save millions of tax dollars.? If we can prevent the demolitions, I'm predicting that Broadway from Euclid to Country Club will become very much like Congress and Fourth Avenue, but in a funky, Mid Century Modern way.

The official public comment period is over, but we can still make our views known, or simply show up to support the Citizens Task Force, which, in my view, is being bullied by the City.?

Please come to the Broadway Citizens Task Force meeting.?

Start time is?5:30 p.m., Thurs., March 26
Location is 1200 N. Campbell, activity building at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church

Years from now, our grandchildren will be glad we helped save Broadway from being turned into an urban highway.

Thanks,

Carlos

Neat postcards

I stumbled across this page on the interwebs. I don't know if you've seen it, Carlos. There are some awesome images of old downtown Tucson. Some of them pre-date paved roads, even!

That is an awesome photo. I love vintage trikes.

David"s slides: motorcycle cop on Scott

Hello All,

David has graciously shared a bunch of old family slides with us, which I'm slowly sorting and scanning. ?Here's the very first one, a striking image of a motorcycle cop chalking a tire on Scott Ave, facing north. ?You can see the Santa Rita Hotel in the background. ?The Carnegie Library on the right is partially obscured. Click through to see a contemporary shot of the same view. ?In the modern shot, the library is completely obscured by trees, so the next few images are vintage views of the library from various other sources.

I know the slide is from the 1960's, and I know the cop was related to David, but he'll have to fill in any additional details.

Thanks again David!

The "Downtown Misc" photo album is here...?

So nice of you to offer to share your photos. ?First let me digitize them for you so the group can enjoy them. ?And you'll have them all on one CD. ?I'm also doing this for member David right now.?Then we can discuss your options on what to do with them. ?I'll contact you off the message board.

Thanks,

Carlos ?
