Re: Drug Stores

Let's not forget the very classy downtown drug store
"Pennington Drug" owned and operated by Ben & Ann
Fink.
------------------------------------------------------
Or the Woolworth? ,5-10 cent store with the lunch
counter and hardwood floors.....another shop my sister
and I were fascinated with but never went into was the
big long wig place downtown. We use to peak in the
windows but it seemed like a freaky place, it was
there for many years. I remember going downtown after
the Pioneer Hotel fire staring at the burned building
and later hearing stories it was haunted. Funny what
one can conjure up in their mind when hearing stories
like that. Does anyone remember when the lawyer show
Petrocelli was partly filmed in Tucson in the late
70's? For years a window in an old downtown office
building ( I think near the Wig shop) had the name
Petrocelli, Attorney at Law painted on it long after
the show had been cancelled.

Ann- Are you any relation to the late Willadean
Tarwater who lived out in the Drexel Heights area for
many years? Her son Brice, was married to my sister in
the early 80's. Brice had one two brothers, one named
Stevie and had sisters but only remember one named
Elaine. Willadean was a friend of mine, she lived on
Hildreth street in a yellow house for many years, we
lived down the block. Just curious.
Thanks,

One of my older sons boyhood friends starting working
at Rincon Market when they were still in high school,
they are 36 yrs old now. I guess this kid will have to
go get another job now, since he never worked anywhere
else in his life. Sad things have to disappear to make
way for progress.

Re: Valley of the Moon

The course across from Magic Carpet was called Green
Acres. I think the name changed later on, but I can't
remember what it changed to. We used to go there for
the arcade.
There used to be a place with a really big arcade,
bumper boats, I think go carts too, out in the general
direction of Tanque Verde. I seem to remember the
building as a castle and the entrance was like a
drawbridge. If I'm remembering this correctly, does
anyone recall the name?
Steve Q.
--------------------------------------------------
That place out on Tanque Verde is Golf n Stuff. I do
believe its still there. Very expensive to take a few
kids there but I guess it was worth seeing them have
fun. I do remember riding the boats and getting soaked
head to toe, not too fun when it was chilly outside.

I remember the Magic Carpet and the Putt Putt golf
course also. There also was a big giant slide on
Alvernon between 29th and 22nd St years back and when
my boys were little they would go crazy when we went
to Malibu Raceway near 22nd and Alvernon.

Hi,
Are you sure they were painted by Ted? It might have
been done by his son Nick who used to create a lot of
artwork in the style of his father. Anyway, it should
have been saved.
-----------------------------------------------------
I was told by oldtimers in the area it was done by Ted
himself sometime in the late 50's, early 60's when the
site was built and that was why some people were upset
when it covered over. I moved in the area in 1967 or
so but we use to go to the restaurant even before that
time. Also was told that Ted de Grazia use to go to
the San Xavier Mission sometimes and would stop in the
bar/restaurant and got to be friends with the owner.
So I can only say what I was told. I do know that his
son Nick also did artwork somewhat like his fathers.
You are right it should have been saved. It still is a
piece of historic art that should be enjoyed.
Deb

Hey...Does anyone remember this wierd eclectic place
called The Valley of the Moon? Kind of all built out
of stone and this old guy (white hair and long white
beard) would do this act with white mice & rats.
Had a birthday party there, probably in the early
'50s...
----------------------------------------------------
Frank-I remember Valley of the Moon. Was still there
in the last 10 or so years because I took my
granddaughter there for Halloween one year. She is now
16 and remember she was about 4 or 5 yrs old then.
Strange place......Wonder if its still open for
Halloween? Wasn't it over in the Flowing Wells area
somewhere, off Prince Rd ? I can't really remember.

Morgue tales on AZ star

Hi everybody!!

I just found this link to a fairly new blog on the Star site. It is
done by the AZ star librarian. Pretty interesting....

This has some interesting historical information and photos. I found
it linked to today's Tucson Time Capsule feature.

I will put it in the links section for future reference.

cheers,
Gretchen

The building is still there, but is called Charlies bar. They still
serve pizza's,but not the same as the old Blue Saguaro.Used to go there
in the early 80's,and yes it had the supperclub atmosphere, and great
food, very friendly waitresses who knew you by name if you frequented
enough.Nice spot.

Addition to song file

Thanks, Carlos, for putting together the list! I thought of another - Under African Skies, by
Paul Simon, from the Graceland album. It's a duet with Tucson's own Linda Ronstadt.

"In early memory
Mission music
Was ringing 'round my nursery door
I said take this child, Lord
From Tucson Arizona
Give her the wings to fly through harmony
And she won't bother you no more"

I have mps of the songs I submitted and will email them to you.

Re: The Fugitive in Tucson, 1963...

I worked at the Hotel Congress for a few years in the early '90s and I can confirm that the
doors, either at the Congress Street entrance or the opposite side, do not face the stairs. I
believe the current configuration has been, for the most part, that way since there was a fire
in the Hotel when John Dillinger was staying there in 1934. You can read about it at the
Hotel's website <a href=">here.</a>

Next, Kimble is supposedly staying in room 26 at the Hotel Congress.
But the outside doors FACE the staircase. I don't think that's how
they look today. Did they change something, or film elsewhere?

Also, when Kimble's bus passes the old pavillion at La Placita

You're right Kerry...
"Schmitty" was even after me for awhile since I shared a biology lab
table at Rincon High with his girlfriend Gretchen Fritz, whom he later
murdered. She was a nice, extremely shy girl...just the type Schmidt
could control...and he didn't like anyone talking to his property.
Short story: There was a chase through the streets of east Tucson when
Schmitty finally caught up with me at an intersection. We evaded him
and he finally got bored of chasing me... whew!!!

Re: The Fugitive in Tucson, 1963...

Frank Casanova

Yeah... I just watched that same episode a couple of weeks ago. It was
obvious the interior scenes were shot on a soundstage. That's the
typical practice...Hollywood will come to Tucson to shoot the
Exteriors, but the Interiors will all be shot back in LA on a
soundstage. That's why the interior scenes don't match the Tucson
reality.

Re: mini golf and gas stations

Hi,

It was owned by the same people who had Oracle Acres on Oracle Road
just south of Prince. I spent many hours at that place. It had pinball
machines too, and there was a baseball game that was easy to get free
replays on.

Another topic: Old gas stations. My first paying job was at Dana
Brothers Shamrock at Campbell Avenue and Blacklidge Drive. It was odd
because it wasn't a major intersection, but there was a gas station on all
four corners. On the southwest corner was Dana Bros., on the northwest was
Richfield, on the southeast was Chevron (aka Standard), and on the northeast
was another; I forget which brand (Enco?).
When I first moved here, there was a Signal Gas station on the
northwest corner of First Avenue and Prince, near where I lived (a
poor-folks trailer court with the pretentious name of Elms Mobile Home
Estates). First Avenue was a two-lane road with so little traffic that one
time a neighbor girl lay down in the middle of the road until she could hear
a car coming.
There was a little Dixie station farther west on Prince, and a little
bit east was a little station called Gas for Less. And of course a lot of
people remember Blakeley's. Rebel, on East Fort Lowell, was a cut-rate
station that was so cheap that they didn't bother to bury the fuel-storage
tank.

Anybody remember a nightclub on Speedway called 'The Cedars'. Used to go there
in the mid 60's <<<<<<<<<<<

Yes, but I was too young to go there. The drinking age was still 21.
I noticed by the sign on the front of the Cedars that the house band for a long time was the Grodes. Great group!
For some excellent made-in-Tucson mid-'60s music, buy these two at:

(Search for "Grodes" and "Think of the Good Times" (a Tucson compilation; look for the one at the bottom)
The Lewallen Brothers had a CD come out in the '90s, but it's out of print. You might be able to find a cheap used one.

Here's what the Citizen wrote about Rincon Market's history and recent
change of ownership:

Published: 01.23.2008
81-year-old Rincon Market to be sold
Locally owned and operated since before the Great Depression, Rincon
Market will be sold to its third Tucson family next month, said
co-owner and general manager Paul Cisek.

Opened in 1926 at 1802 E. Hawthorne St. by Jack Uvodich Sr. and Jr.,
the market moved in 1967 to what had been Savory's Food Market,
which was destroyed by fire that year.

The move was necessary for the expanding University of Arizona campus.
1802 E. Hawthorne puts the original Savory's on the WEST side of
Campbell Avenue, between Speedway and 6th Street. That makes a lot of
sense, as aerial photos of the UA campus from the 50s and early 60s
show a fairly uninhabited (or low-density) "swath" of land between
Cherry and Campbell. The campus appears to have been bordered more or
less on the east by Cherry (where the main library sits today),
although that swath is now filled with the Flandrau, McKale and many
associated athletic buildings/pools, Optical Science, a parking
garage, Space Sciences, etc.

Re: Charles Schmid

Actually he died in prison. His nickname was "The Pied Piper of Tucson"
as he was dubbed by the press. <<<<<<

Yes, as I recall, he was killed by another inmate.
"The Pied Piper of Tucson" came from Life magazine. While he was here, the writer apparently listened to KTKT, where the song "Pied Piper" by the Changin' Times was played a lot -- it was a big hit here around that time. The Life writer quoted the lyrics at the beginning of the article.
In later years, I heard "Pied Piper" played as an oldie, but it was some crappy version by someone called Crispian St. Peters. It turns out that the original "Pied Piper," which sounds a lot like Dylan, was a hit in only a few parts of the country. The next year, a cover version was a national hit, but it wasn't played here because it already had been a hit.
