RBA Indigo Bunting

Good morning Vanbirders,

?

No doubt about bird of the morning today at the Colony Farm banding station when we trapped and banded this second year male Indigo Bunting – our second capture of this species in our 15 years of banding and monitoring at Colony Farm.

Derek… wow! Nice! I didn’t realize you had one before.

How many species have you now banded at Colony Farm?

Thanks Vero and Dan!

Yeah, what a spectacular bird eh? They hybridize with Lazuli Bunting where their ranges overlap and we obviously have breeding LAZB in the park – having said that it’s still way outside of range as you guys know. As for banded species we were stuck on 99 for the longest time and finally got species 100 and were expecting it to be something really amazing….it was an Eurasian Collared Dove! :o)

?

Happy birding!

Great! Keep at it Derek. I think it is just a question of time before some more amazing rarities show up in the nets. Such a good location. That patch of serious green in an ocean of suburbia. It’s like a magnet for migrants.

Thanks Dan – Yes, it really is an oasis for migrants crossing these increasingly fragmented urban and suburban landscapes!
