开云体育Good morning everyone, I spent just over an hour this morning looking for the BLUE JAY reported yesterday in Port Coquitlam. I went to the marsh on the north side of Lougheed Highway, west side of the Pitt River, west end of the bridge. I presume that’s the “marsh” the observer is referring to? It’s the red-circled area on the Google Earth map inserted below. Unfortunately no sight or sound of a Blue Jay. I’m wondering if it’s at all possible that the bird she saw might have been one of the California Scrub-jays that are seen regularly in Maple Ridge? Cheers, Colin Clasen Coquitlam, BC ? ? ? ? How far do they range? Also, I guess they've been breeding for a few years now so where would their offspring disperse too? Cheers Chris |

开云体育Hi Chris, Over the past 5 or 6 years since they were first found in Maple Ridge, they’ve been typically seen in the center part of the Google map below. Cheers, Colin Clasen Coquitlam, BC ? ? 开云体育P.S. Birders often find that if they just start walking around that neighbourhood wearing their binoculars, one of the locals will inevitably ask if you’re looking for the Scrub-jays, since they’ve gotten used to so many birders looking for them. 开云体育That offspring dispersal question is a good one Chris. Although the jays are always in that neighborhood, ?they don’t really seem to be increasing in population that much from year to year. Yet in 2018 I watched two adults feeding four fledglings. That’s a decent brood. Presuming they are breeding every year they must have produced a lot of kids. Where did all these kids go? They don’t seem to be hanging around.?Daniel Bastaja danielbastaja@... On 2020. Apr 6., at 22:44, Colin Clasen <colinclasen@...> wrote:

In that neighbourhood, no problem at all Chris. As Colin said, the locals are used to seeing birders. :)

开云体育Hi All Looks like the Scrub-jays don't move around too much. On the map X is where they first showed up in my backyard. X2 is where they first bred and it looks like someone has a peanut feeder near X3. It's my opinion that these birds are very feedercentric as there was also someone feeding them in the vicinity of the first 2 locations. Anybody know the current count?
