Re: Birds aren't real campaign
I also saw this ‘Birds aren’t Real’ thing Dan and you can initially think it’s just a joke but as you rightly say, there are some truly nutty people out there and putting any negative focus on birds is dangerous for the ever deepening crisis that we know the birds of the world are in! ? I hate to think we’re fighting a losing battle but it sure does feel like that sometimes! ? Derek ? ?

Birds aren't real campaign
Derek… I agree. Geico really dropped the ball on this one.
Speaking of birds and “humour”, now we have his…
Somebody is actually spending money on a campaign to convince people that birds are spying on us for the government. It is meant to poke fun at alt right conspiracy theories, but GEEZ!! Birds are on the defensive big time as it is! Do they really need this kind of negative attention, even if it is tongue-in-cheek? The child sex ring in the basement of a NYC pizza parlour was supposed to be a joke too, but somebody showed up there with a gun. In today’s crazy world, even the most bizarre theories sometimes have real world consequences.
Yet again, it is trivializing and dissing a vital part of nature that is fast disappearing. How about spending that money on conservation efforts or public awareness of real problems? I just don't like it, but maybe I am overreacting.

Great stuff Perry! I too was incredulous at this commerical. As I am no longer on Facebook, I was unable to leave a comment on their Facebook page, so instead I sent the e-mail below to the company CEO.
Dear Geico,
I was very disappointed when I saw your recent commercial about angry birds striking windows in a suburban home. Songbird populations the world over are in precipitous decline. It has been estimated that in North America alone, there are 3 billion fewer birds than 50 years ago. There are many factors contributing to this decline such as habitat loss and the overuse of pesticides, but another big factor is window strikes. The real estate development boom along with our penchant for light, airy spaces created by more glass is taking a terrible toll on our songbirds. Window collisions kill hundreds of millions of migratory songbirds in North America every year.
At a time when most large corporations are scrambling to burnish their green credentials (if for no other reason than marketing), such a commercial makes Geico seem either oblivious to, or uncaring about a serious environmental issue. Moreover trivializing bird window strikes undermines the years of work done by many fine organizations trying to educate the public about window strikes and how the carnage can be ameliorated. I strongly urge you to withdraw this commercial. If nothing else, I would recommend compensating for this badly misplaced attempt at humor by making a donation to one of the organizations that are working hard to counteract the problem.
Here are a couple of links too help you understand the nature and severity of the problem.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

It's pretty likely this is one of our bands with all the birds banded at O.W.L. Based on the fact that it was seen in Vancouver, appears quite large and that it looks to me like that last number (after the second 5) is a 0 (or possibly another rounded bottom number), this is the most likely possibility:
1115-15350 banded in 2019 as a HY female recovered in the stairway at a SkyTrain station in Vancouver (not sure exactly where in Vancouver) rehabbed and released back in Vancouver
The other possibilities weren't as good as this one.

We band COHA ?at Colony Farm and also band all of the rehabbed raptors at Orphaned Wildlife (O.W.L.) in Delta prior to release, so there is a good chance it’s one of ‘our’ birds. We are often successful in tracking band numbers from partially read bands so let me look through our data and I’ll get back to you with any information I can find out. | Derek J. A few weeks ago I photographed a banded adult Cooper’s Hawk at the sanctuary at Hastings Park. ?Unfortunately I could only read the last three numbers on the band, which were 535, I believe. ?I did get a view of the opposite side of the band but it was very hard to read the numbers. ?They may have been 123, but that is only a guess. ?I reported the sighting to the Geological Survey banding centre, but they weren’t able to find at the particular bird because of the incomplete numbers for the band. ?I’m posting here just in case whoever banded it might be local and can perhaps identify the individual. Much manipulated view of the other side of the band.
