Monte… I am truly sorry to hear about your brother. My deepest condolences. A stark reminder that this virus is deadly serious and we should all do our best to prevent it spreading further.

Stay safe!

So, was refreshing to see your post, BUT, I truly believe that eBird, yes eBird.org (Cornell.edu), should have had the responsibility and consideration to make this issue something to make a point with birders - to show their backing along with nearly every organization and business out there. I've received tons of these type emails, and I'm almost always just deleting them because they flow in each and every day.

Yet eBird, NOTHING, not even a slight mention.

So my point, eBird as an organization (Cornell.edu), and one that receives a ton of money from donations from companies and people all over the world should have stepped up and made this an issue while birding.

Totally irresponsible and with so many things I've seen out of Cornell for so long, this email actually was like the last straw - again, nothing to do with you but really drove my point home. It's April 5th. Not March 5th!

Anyway, Daniel, thank you for posting What you did. At least one eBirder in the entire world, Daniel Bastaja, actually Noticed there is a WHOLE PLANET EARTH PANDEMIC out there Right Now Killing people, including my Brother as well.

Yesterday about 1pm and today about 10am I got amazing close views of an AMERICAN BITTERN hunting at Colony Farm.

It’s in the ditch beside the east end of the parking lot at the community gardens, south end of Colony Farm Road.

Both times several of us (who were all there solo) saw it catch a salamander!

It doesn’t react at all to any of the many walkers and bikers going by and talking on the dike right above it.

Below are a few photos of it.

David S. found 8 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS in the field on the west side of Colony Farm Road (7 male, 1 female). Could only get this poor, distant poor photo.

We watched them for about 20 minutes, until they flew to the east side of Colony Farm Road, then a Northern Harrier flushed them and they disappeared.

Re: Blue jay in marsh next to Pitt River bridge?

Good morning everyone,

I spent just over an hour this morning looking for the BLUE JAY reported yesterday in Port Coquitlam.

I went to the marsh on the north side of Lougheed Highway, west side of the Pitt River, west end of the bridge. I presume that’s the “marsh” the observer is referring to? It’s the red-circled area on the Google Earth map inserted below.

Unfortunately no sight or sound of a Blue Jay.

I’m wondering if it’s at all possible that the bird she saw might have been one of the California Scrub-jays that are seen regularly in Maple Ridge?

Cheers,

Love this, Catalonia was one of our favourite holiday destinations. Being a Brit, it’s a great reminder of the old work birds.
