Hi everyone, It’s been several weeks since I promised to do a bird walk, so let’s have one more bird walk this Friday, for anyone who’s still around. We will meet at the central ponds at Ag Ops at 8am. I was out there earlier today and counted over 40 Ring-necked Ducks and 8 Hooded Mergansers on the largest pond. If you haven’t been to Ag Ops before, the entrance is across from the Lot 30 entrance on MLK Blvd. The gate should be open by 8. Once inside, stay to the right of the canal, and follow it until you get to a pond ((33.9647589, -117.3390799). Good birding, David Rankin

Townsend's Solitaire on campus
Yesterday at around 6 pm I found a rather cooperative Townsend's Solitaire in the barren/dead trees on the side of the avocado grove by the water reservoir, affording very good looks. A white eye-ring, a tawny wing patches & white feathers in its tail -- all in full view. It was pretty close to begin with, but the moment I played the TOSO calls, it flew even closer. Not a rarity in the county, I would think, but hardly a bird I would expect to find on Campus. For sure my first at UCR. Kirill Shtengel

Migrants in the botanic garden today!
Hi all, The botanic garden is filled with migrants today. A flock of 15-20 Black-headed Grosbeaks and Western Tanagers in the fruiting trees a few hundred feet inside the entrance is perhaps the most I’ve seen in the garden. Today would be a good day to sneak away for a quick walk in the garden! David

Bird walk! Next week! Wed, April 20th
Hello UCR birders, We are approaching the peak of spring migration, and there’s a brief break in my schedule, so I’ll be leading a bird walk next Wednesday (April 20th) at the Botanic Garden. Meet at 9 am in the parking lot. I’ll try to get there a bit early, and we can bird outside the gate until they open. Target birds include migrant Nashville, Wilson’s and Black-throated Gray Warblers, Black-chinned Hummingbirds, Western Tanager, Warbling Vireo, Black-headed Grosbeak and maybe even a Rufous or Calliope Hummingbird. Ninad (a former UCR birder) calculated that the third week in April is the best time to go birding in Riverside! Let me know if you are planning on coming, and feel feee to text or call if you are running late (619 869 3952) See you next week David Rankin

Birders wanted to participate in online psychology experiment: $40 Amazon Gift card
I'm back with another study. New participants or people who participated in July are welcome. This time, it's a $40 Amazon gift card because it's a little more detailed. Please consider participating in a NSF-funded IRB-approved study. You may forward to other birders, but this isn't appropriate for non-birders. Bird Highlighting Study Link to study: https://xai-ucsd.com/Bird_Highlighting_Preferences_Contrast/Landing.html Background: The goal of this study is to investigate the best ways to assist people in identifying bird species from photographs. The insights from this study will be used for a bird identification app that can explain to novice birders or experienced bird watchers in a new location how to identify a particular bird. Length: Estimated ~45 minutes or less. Payment: $40 Amazon e-gift card delivered via email. Compatible devices/browsers: Please use a laptop, desktop, or large tablet for this study. Length: Estimated ~1 hour or less. Payment: $20 Amazon e-gift card delivered via email. Compatible devices/browsers: Please use a laptop, desktop, or large tablet for this study. Browsers Google Chrome and Firefox work best. Contact: For questions, feedback (very appreciated), or payment delays of over 3 days, please contact ssoltani@... Thanks Mike P.S., let me know when the Hooded Mergansers return to AgOPs.

Birders wanted to participate in online psychology experiment: $20 Amazon Gift card
In addition to birding, I've been working with students on how to get computers to recognize birds and how to help people identify birds. Please consider participating in a NSF-funded IRB-approved study. You may forward to other birders, but this isn't appropriate for non-birders. Note: In case too many people sign up, you'd be added to a waitlist for another study that will go up later this week. Bird walk Thursday Thursday April 22nd at the Botanic Gardens
Hi All, Migration is in full swing now, so I'll lead another bird walk, this time at the Botanic Gardens, on Thursday, April 22nd. We will meet at the front entrance at 9am and see what migrants we can find. This is the perfect time of year for Calliope Hummingbirds, so hopefully we'll be able to find one feeding on the abundant sage near the office. Let me know if you're planning on coming, but no RSVP is necessary. Good Birding, David Rankin

Restarting UCR bird walks
2
Hi All, It's been a long and strange year or so since we've last gotten together. Spring migration is just starting, some local breeding birds like orioles and swallows have already returned and soon there should be buntings, warblers, tanagers and grosbeaks moving through on their frantic way north to their breeding grounds. Would anyone be interested in doing some small bird walks this spring? We can easily social distance and wear masks. If anyone is interested, let's meet at the usual spot at Ag Ops at 8am on Wednesday next week, April 14th. Please email me ahead of time so I know how many people will be coming. Good Birding, David Rankin

Virginia's Warbler and Marsh Wren at Ag Ops
Hi All, First of all I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, it's been a while! Obviously we won't be doing organized bird walks for a while, but hopefully people are still able to get out and look for birds in their neighborhoods and yards. The lack of foot traffic on campus makes for some good birding too, especially with fall migration in full swing. While checking on some plants at Ag Ops today I managed to get a little birding in, and was pleasantly surprised by how many migrants I was able to find despite the heat and it being midday. The highlights were a MARSH WREN in the weedy grass around the main pond (my first for campus!) and a VIRGINIA'S WARBLER in the Eucalyptus grove next to the western most pond (the one that borders Chicago Ave). Other notable birds were 3 Lazuli Buntings, Nashville, Orange-crowned, Yellow, Yellow-rumped and Black-throated Gray Warblers, many many Savannah Sparrows and the first influx of Lincoln's and White-crowned Sparrows. Good Birding, David Rankin
