Affiliation
Hello, I am building an affiliation network, though with a small change that there are two classes of affiliates (people) assigned to companies. If there is a connection from 1 to 2, it is directed from 1 to 2, if it is 1 to 1 then it is undirected, if 2 to 2 the link is not present. I have already designed an algorithm in excel but extending it to many connections would be too time consuming, because there can be even one person connecting 4000 companies, and each of the companies would have to be connected. I would appreciate a faster method. Thank you! Robert Magnuszewski

2 separate networks when using Netdraw
3
Hi Steve, I have been investigating movements of rural pigs in one of the SA Provinces. Each unique destination of live pig and its matching origin are entered into Excel spreadsheet under two columns (origin and destination). These data are then imported into Ucinet, where the local municipalities (the province is divided into Districts which in turn are divided into local municipalities) are assigned as nodes and the movement of pigs between these nodes as ties. When I am trying to visualize the network using Netdraw, I am getting two separate networks. What do you think went wrong? Thanks.

Circle Layout Flattened
3
When choosing the circle layout my monitor shows more of an flattened circle making node labels much more difficult to read at the top and bottom of the circle. The monitor is set at 1680 x 1050. Is there a way to circularize the layout more or do I need another monitor? Thank you.

Two-Mode vs One-Mode Centralities?
When I determine 2-mode centralities I find the very high betweenness score of an individual node to match the reality of that individuals known behavior. However, when determining that nodes betweenness after converting to 1-mode that node has average betweenness. When using 2-mode data should one rely only on the 2-mode calculations or both or a mix? I realize that one will not get the same values, e.g., density, as they are different sets of data due to the single or multiple node constraints. Thank you.

Definition for Netdraw layout - geodesic distance?
3
Dear Ucinet gurus, I am writing a report for policy makers having used UCINET and NETdraw to analyse and visualise some government organisational networks. I appreciate that the default layout and one I tend to use in Netdraw uses geodesic distance which puts nodes with shortest paths next to each other. I also tend to represent nodes with higher in-degree as an attribute to be larger and those with lower in-degree are smaller in size. Often higher in-degree nodes are in the central part of the layout. In the Ucinet help we see the description of geodesic distance to be: ¡°The length of a path is the number of edges it contains. The distance between two nodes is the length of the shortest path. The distance matrix can be converted to a nearness matrix by taking reciprocals of the distances¡¡± This makes sense. However for the non-network nerds, can be slightly confusing. I have previously described that within the netdraw layout nodes that have similar characteristics and/or position in the network structure are positioned closer together in the image. I believe this is the case, but feedback on this description would be appreciated. Core-Periphery Order?
After a core-periphery analysis what is the basis for listing the nodes in the core? I cannot see why some nodes are near each other and not others, I understand the mechanism for the core and the peripheries but not the listing order in the core. I assume the arrangement is to be able show ties the the peripheries but couldn't all four blocks be sorted on some basis, especially the core? Thank you.

basic network data
I'm looking to calculate the relative network density of longitudinal network frames. Does UCINET provide an output of the total number of ties and nodes for a given network? Thnx, Nelson

2-Mode Faction Analysis Error Message
Now that I can work with my 2-mode dataset (588x448) in UCINET I tried several 2-mode analyses and except for some header labeling output problem in Core Periphery the only problem is with Faction analysis, which after about 30 minutes gave this error message: "Access violation at address 0050956A in module 'Uci6.exe'. Read of address 000000A." Clicking ok just let UCINET go back to spinning its wheel for about another hour when I gave up as the results may have been affected by the error message anyway. Running Win7 64bit, 16GB RAM, AMD quad core (8 threads).

Importing Excel Matrix Crash Success
I forgot about the Excel data editor in UCINET. I copied my selected data in fine, however, it said I had 593 rows and not 588. I scanned the Excel spreadsheet and saw nothing. I deleted numerous empty rows as well as cleared contents and re-pasted and got the same problem. So, I copied the Excel data into a new Excel spreadsheet and now could both do a standard Import as well as a copy and paste. I have no idea what was hidden in that Excel spreadsheet, Probably due to multiple students keying in the data some hidden cells or rows were present. Thanks very much.

Importing Excel Matrix Crash
3
I guess this is my week for questions and issues. I am trying to import an Excel spreadsheet file (.xlsx) and UCINET crashes with this message: "TProgressBar property out of range" I am running UCINET 6.676 and the dataset is 2-mode (588x488). I can't even create a smaller 1-mode as importing is crashing. I am using the 6.676 version as the 6.683 version does strange things with header labels on output in the log file (with 2-mode analyses). I suspect UCINET is unhappy with the dataset size, especially the column number. Thanks.

Network Diameter and Radius
In UCINET I can easily choose 2-mode analysis to show network cohesion values such as diameter and radius. However, with 1-mode analysis of the converted matrix I cannot seem to locate where one can find diameter and radius although there are several others displayed (28), i.e., Network-->Whole Network-->Multiple Measures. Any advice is welcome.

Binarizing Continuous Data
I want to binarize some continuous data (latitude, longitude) such that the datasets are all binary. It also seems that network analysis software is more "friendly" towards binary data.in my testing so far. The method I am considering is simply coding for presence absence of either the mean+/1SD or not, which should capture 2/3 of similar values. One could break each continuous attribute into several categories but that would greatly add the number of attributes when originally there was only one attribute. Any other ideas would be welcome. Thanks.

Spherical Distances from GIS/GPS Coordinates
6
I noticed in UCINET Tools there is the possibility of producing a matrix of distances from latitudes and longitudes. I'm naive but curious -- how has that been used in network analysis and does anyone know of some references? Thanks.

2-Mode Core/Periphery Data
3
Can one use a mixture of continuous data with binary data in a 2-mode core-periphery analysis? UCINET crashes when I do that but if I remove the continuous data (all ranged from 0-1) UCINET is fine. However, I do not want to abandon those continuous data. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Residual plots for MRQAP
Hi all, Please, I wish to know if computing residual plots is necessary for regression in networks such as MRQAP and if yes, please what are the values I should use to compute the residual plots e.g standardized coefficients, unstandardized coefficients, p values or what values ? I intend to do this having read that R squared is not enough to indicate fitness of the model. Yours, Oscar

Board Interlock heterogenity
4
Hello, What would be the best method to create a directed board interlocks network, where the direction goes from company A to company B if they both share a director, AND the director serves as an executive at A and a regular member at B (according to Brennecke & Rank 2017 Tie heterogeneity in networks of interlocking directorates: a cost¨Cbenefit approach to firms¡¯ tie choice). I have a database with companies and assigned to them directors together with their positions, the network would obviously be a matrix of companyXcompany relations. Thank you in advance. Kind Regards, Robert Magnuszewski

Output in Data ->Export -> Excel seems to be wrong
That¡¯s annoying. I have half a mind to just output CSV files, which tend to be trouble-free. The option to choose xlsx type files relies on Microsoft¡¯s COM tools, which always seem to have issues. Can you send me the data? Steve.borgatti@... <mailto:Steve.borgatti@...> steve Sent: Sunday, August 4, 2019 18:38 To: ucinet@... Subject: [UCINET] Output in Data ->Export -> Excel seems to be wrong Hi there, I do not know if it is something wrong or just the way it is. I was trying to export to excel seven joined matrices (Data ->Export -> Excel) When appears the options to save the files: 1) If I choose "Xls - Older excel type" the output excel files is correct. It will have seven matrices, one in which tab. 2)If I choose "Xlsx- newer Excel type", the output excel files is incorrect. It will have eight matrices; The first two matrices will be the same (with the same results, but with their own names) and it will appear a new one (plan 8). I have 2013 excel installed, maybe it is old for this function. Thank you Vanessa

Keyplayer
I am missing something when using keyplayer in UCINET. No matter how many nodes I select, 3, 5, 7, 10 keyplayer selects the first 3, 5, 7, or 10 individuals in the UCINET dataset (which are in alphabetical order). I am using version 1.45 and studying fragmentation. I though keyplayer would identify 3, 5, 7, etc names of the keyplayers that when removed would cause fragmentation. Any ideas of what I doing wrong would be appreciated.

CATEGORICAL AUTOCORRELATION: RCT analysis with 4 groups
4
DearUCINET group, I am working on arelational contingency table analysis looking at the associations betweenfour groups. One type of node (Y),split into two groups based on their position in the network (core and periphery)and another two groups based on attribute X and non-X. These groups aremutually exclusive. I want to test if the association from Y to X isconsistent from the core to the margin of the network or if there are differentpatterns of association based on Y's position in the network. I created a NodeAttfile with two columns, the ID and the attribute column, recoding each node as either1, 2,3,4 (i.e. core, periphery, X, non-X). Problem: UCINETautomatically turns each category of the variable into 4 separate dummyvariables and only considers the first dummy variable in the contingency table. How do I get UCINET to considerall the categories for the RCT analysis? And secondly, am I going about this in the right way, in choosing RCT analysis for this type of question? Thanks for all yourhelp UCINET group! Cheers, Mathew
