Chinese label turned into unreadable symbols when editing metafile image in MS PowerPoint

Hi All,

I have a question regarding the Chinese label not being able to correctly display in PowerPoint when I edited the network image/picture in metafile format I saved from NetDraw.? I have been using UCINET and NetDraw for many years dealing with dataset in English and found no problems editing the picture in metafile format.? However, recently I've been working on datasets with actor labels in Traditional Chinese, and when I used the 'edit picture' function in PowerPoint, all the labels in Chinese characters turned into unreadable garbled codes (e.g., ??y?C (¡èG?~??)), and I had to manually type them in.? Does anyone know how to address this issue??

Thanks,
Yi-Hwa

Yi-Hwa,

If I understand you correctly, NetDraw generates a valid Metafile of the network which you successfully import into PowerPoint which shows the appropriate characters.??It is only when you click on "Edit Picture" and say you want to "convert it to a Microsoft Office Drawing object" that you encounter the problem.

I have encountered similar problems with Unicode characters.? I believe the limitation is in the way the Microsoft Drawing Object is dealing with unicode characters.??

In just checked this idea by creating a Flow Chart in PowerPoint labeled with Unicode characters.? I saved it as an Enhanced Metafile in PowerPoint (right-clicking on the graphic and saying save "Save as picture".)?

I then inserted that Metafile as a picture on a new slide and said "Edit picture" and clicked yes to the "Convert to Microsoft Offfice Drawing object" as you described. Even in this metafile, created in and by PowerPoint, the Chinese characters switched to question marks when I did this.? So, this seems pretty clearly a Microsoft issue, specifically something to do with Microsoft Drawing Objects.

However, this also suggests that if you have other software available to you that can use to edit a metafile, without having to convert it to a Microsoft Drawing Object, you could edit the image there before importing it into PowerPoint.

I hope that? helps...
